ammo cans for shotgun shells?

So I asked this question over on THR, looking for some input here. I'm looking to store all my 2 3/4" buck and slugs inside their 5 round boxes stacked and layered in an ammo can (s). Capacity is less important than the shells not sliding, bouncing or shifting. The MG42 looks good, the 50 cal MAY work, but I can't tell. Short of brining a pocket full of empty shotshell boxes into my army navy surplus, what would you do to determine a good box for this? Keep in mind I'm looking to store these inside their original boxes and I wouldnt mind being ablt to cut and measure some bubble wrap to line the sides and be able to throw in a few desiccant packets on top before sealing it.

Take a few minutes and mock up a brick(s), cut from an old cardboard box, that's the size of the your block(s) of ammo boxes. Take it to the surplus store. It will be a lot quicker than measuring ammo can interiors.

Good luck.

Camera battery is dead so no photo, but in the 50 cal can, on the end of the box I can stack 7 boxes of 5 per row. I can get 4 rows of 7 boxes per level stacked 2 high. There is a little fudge room so 2 or 3 boxes can be put in to make up the little excess. I would say total capacity is about 75 boxes of 5 shells.

It fits nice and snugly, is water proof, and has a convenient carrying handle.

Any mil ammo can in good condition will work well as long as the rubber seal is there. A 6x7x11&3/4" mil ammo can will hold 6---25 rnd 12 ga boxes + about 5 ----5 rnd shot shell boxes. You can convert that info to all 5 rnd boxes.
Also a cabelas plastic dry box works well.
