I just happened along a site about Doc Holliday a few minutes ago. It is sponsored by americanwest.com
At the end of this nice piece, as I scrolled down I see a statement that read:
STAY AWAY FROM GUNS-- DON'T DESTROY YOUR LIFE AND OTHERS
I thought to myself, what kind of sh&& is this! So, an e-mail followed.
I really enjoyed the piece on Doc Holliday. What I didn't enjoy was the " Stay Away From Guns" statement at the end.
It seems to me, that the firearm was used in frontier days for self defense on many occasions, and surely for hunting.
I can see the point, when reading about these wild west days, that some of these early settlers got out of hand. Was it not only fair that the honest law abiding citizen be allowed to defend himself?
The same is true even today. The responsible, law abiding gun owner is the rule, rather than the exception. We store our firearms safely, and carry them responsibly, and become proficient in their use.
"The Stay Away From Guns" statement leads one to believe that the gun is the enemy. This is not true. It is the irresponsible, and criminal use of the gun that is the enemy.
Respectfully, Steve Schmoll
