Warning Signs by Alan Caruba

In the Streets!
The real action at the GOP convention in Philadelphia will be in the streets. It will be there where the protesters are, where the inevitable clash with police will occur, where the wails of those taken to detention will be heard. The real questions will be who organized these protesters, who trained them, who funded them, and what, exactly, are they protesting?
If they are protesting multinational corporations, the ruining of the earth’s environment, the movement of jobs to other nations, you can be sure you are listening to the Socialist play book from which they are all reading. You will be listening—at a time of unparalleled prosperity in this nation—to the whining of failed dreams of world domination, failed economic theories, a failed understanding of true liberty, true freedom; the opportunity to either succeed or fail.
Among the protesters will be AFL-CIO unionists perhaps unwittingly acting out the game plan of a Socialist-led organization that is obsolete in an age when workers are stockholders, when even a so-called sweat shop job in Malaysia is sought after by those seeking any opportunity to raise a non-existent standard of living. Other protesters will be the radical environmentalists, trained by the Ruckus Society, a Green organization funded by CNN’s founder, Ted Turner, a self-admitted Socialist. Then, perhaps, some race-baiters and the detritus of lost causes.
The media will call all these groups "anarchists." It has become their way to avoid having to be specific about the various groups and their purpose for protesting. Don’t be fooled.
This isn’t the Chicago of the Vietnam War days when the protesters reflected the growing public distaste for that conflict. This is the death rattle of those who hate the changes the Internet, genetically modified crops, and other technologies are bringing. It is a protest against the multiculturalism and the economic machines, the multinational corporations, that is it spreading everywhere. It is a protest against the future!
Yes, look to the streets of Philadelphia because the convention will only offer a virtual reality of politics, all carefully scripted and planned down to the last minute when the red, white and blue balloons cascade down upon the happy Republicans. Then the performance will repeat itself two weeks later as the Democrats gather. The action will shift to the streets of Los Angeles.
Americans Blissfully Unaware UN Plots to
Change its Charter in September to impose
GLOBAL GOVERNMENT!
While we all wait for the Republican Convention to begin on July 30 and the Democratic convention two weeks later, most Americans are blissfully unaware that the United Nations will bring together many of the world’s leaders to give their blessing to its "Millennium Summit" from September 6th through the 8th. Its purpose is nothing less than to change the UN Charter to convert it into a one-world government.
Surprised you haven’t read a word about this in your local daily newspaper or heard anything about it on radio and television? You will. A huge propaganda blitz will precede the event portraying it as a great step forward for the freedom of all mankind. It’s not. Indeed, it is a full-scale attack on the most basic concept of national sovereignty and self-government, not just for the United States, but all nations. If it succeeds, there will be no need to hold a national election.
You’re invited to read my commentary on this website, The Greatest Threat to Freedom: The UN ‘Millennium Summit’ and Henry Lamb’s excellent commentary on The Charter for Global Democracy. These will provide you with the "meat" of the issues involved. As Henry Lamb points out, the revision of the UN Charter would give it its own standing army, the right to tax all financial transactions, an independent judicial system, and ultimate control over all land, sea and air. No nation could independently permit exploration and extraction of the natural resources within its borders. Any nation could be invaded in the name of maintaining world peace. Anyone could be indicted and tried without recourse to constitutional protections. The new UN would limit the control parents have over their own children.
Plainly said, the Millennium Summit would fulfill the despotic dreams of Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Hitler. If you think the last century was a nightmare of wars to defeat world domination, the proposed UN would be the fulfillment of everything for which freedom-loving people fought and died.
The new United Nations would take away the United States’ permanent position on the Security Council and its essential veto power. U.S. taxpayers currently pick up anywhere from a quarter to a third of the UN budget. We have largely been called upon to underwrite all its so-called peacekeeping missions. They have been dismal failures with the exception of the Gulf War and even that ended poorly leaving Saddam Hussein in power to this day.
The purpose of the Millennium Summit has been in the planning ever since the original UN was created in the late 1940’s following World War II. Its first Secretary General was an American, Alger Hiss, who turned out to be a Soviet agent. Of the seventeen U.S. Department of State diplomats who helped shape the Charter, all but one were later revealed to be secret members of the Communist Party USA. All seven of the UN’s Secretary Generals has been a dedicated socialist or communist. One of them, a former Nazi, Kurt Waldheim, is still drawing a fat pension.
An astonishing 514 multilateral treaties, fashioned over many years and adopted by the General Assembly, have led up to the Millennium Summit. The core twenty-five of these would strip nations of the right to govern their own citizens, attack the role of the family as the essential unit of all societies, and, in the case of U.S. citizens, strip them of the guarantees of the Constitution.
It gets worse! The real power of the United Nations would be transferred to a "People’s Assembly" composed, not of elected representatives, but of those representing the interests of Non-Governmental Organizations. Many of these are radical environmental groups whose core belief is that there are too many people on earth and the population must be reduced in order to protect it from "the human cancer."
If the Germans of the 1940’s could accept the need to kill six million Jews and another five million unionists, gypsies, clergy, homosexuals, and others, can you imagine how easy it would be for the new UN to decide to exterminate anyone it deemed to be a threat to its power? I am not talking ancient history here, but I am talking about a future under the tender mercies of the global government spelled out in a book published by the UN's Commission on Global Governance.
Welcome to the world of Kofi Annan, the current Secretary General, a dedicated Marxist who believes that "markets outpace the ability of societies and their political systems to adjust to them" or "guide the course they take." Annan’s vision of the new world is one in which individual freedom, private property rights, free markets, and national sovereignty would cease to exist.
Welcome to the world of Ralph Nader and the Green Party USA, the enemy of all multinational corporations. Welcome, too, to the world of the Sierra Club, Greenpeace International, Environmental Defense, the Wilderness Society, and countless others ready to rule you.
Welcome to the world of the shadowy UN operative, Maurice Strong, who has said, "It is simply not feasible for sovereignty to be exercised unilaterally by individual nation-states." This man is the senior advisor to the president of the World Bank and Undersecretary General and Senior Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations.
Welcome to the world of Strobe Talbott, a Clinton administration Deputy Secretary of State, who said, "Nationhood as we know it will be obsolete, all states will recognize a single, global authority…National sovereignty wasn’t such a great idea after all." Talbott is apparently not a big fan of the U.S. Constitution.
So permit me to suggest you better pay attention when the UN Millennium Summit gathers on September 6th through the 8th to attempt to destroy everything for which the United States of America and other independent nations stand for. Then let me suggest that the first order of business for the next Congress is to vote to withdraw from the United Nations, so this fascist house of cards can fall into immediate ruin.
We can always start again to construct an entity to deal with various international conflicts. We did after the League of Nations failed. We will do so again when the United Nations is just a memory of a communist plan for world domination.
Poverty, not Climate
Determines the Spread of Disease
While the media continue to tell us that global warming must be avoided to stop the spread of diseases such as malaria, a physicist from Carnegie Mellon University was addressing an International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases held last week in Atlanta. He told his colleagues that poverty was the root of epidemic diseases, not climate.
In the July 18th edition of USA Today, reporter Anita Manning wrote about Hadi Dowlatabi’s address. "Climate change can impact health," he said, but "demographics, socioeconomics, technology and political factors are far more important than climate in public health outcomes."
When you get a lot of people in a nation that is too poor to provide enough hospitals, clinics, and public health facilities to clean the water, inspect the food, and, most importantly, to control the massive insect and rodent pest population, you get epidemics. India and most of Africa comes to mind.
Political stability and access to health services are "easier to manipulate than the climate system," Dowlatabi noted. He could also have added that there is absolutely no way to control the climate. While some so-called scientists have warned that global warming would induce a northern migration of disease-carrying insects, Dowlatabi cited the example of dengue fever, spread by mosquitoes. Between l980 and 1996 there were 43 cases in Texas and 50,333 cases in the Mexican border states. "Does the climate change abruptly at the border", he asked. We all know it doesn’t.
Dowlatabadi made the perfectly sensible recommendation that "rather than spend millions on climate-control policies, governments would do better to improve people’s ability to work, feed their families and have access to health care," wrote Manning. The effort to divert billions to control global warming—something that is not happening—"cannot be justified on public health grounds," he told the Conference attendees.
We have seen the return of malaria, killing millions, because the Greens have gotten DDT and other pesticides banned. We are witnessing an effort to suppress the mosquito population in and around New York City, using pesticides, because of the introduction of West Nile Fever. All this is part of the Green plan to reduce the earth’s population in any and every way possible. Global warming is just another Big Lie used to justify the impoverishment of successful economies and those still struggling to develop. Greens want the trees to live and you to die.
Brownouts and Blackouts
There’s a good reason why Clinton administration officials like Energy Secretary Bill Richardson are wringing their hands over the prospect of brownouts and blackouts as demands for more electrical power increase along with the wider use of things like the computers.
As recently as July 2lst, Secretary Richardson was urging the development of "alternative energy sources such as biofuels and wind power" according to a UPI news article. Like Gore, Richardson was spouting the need to secure "a meaningful decline in our future reliance on fossil fuels…" This is outrageous nonsense. There are enough known reserves of oil, gas, and coal to last well into the next century. Make that centuries if we can just get at the reserves we know exist and that doesn’t include those yet to be discovered. His apparent solution to a very serious problem is to build hundreds of thousands of windmills. He actually wants at least "five percent of the nation’s energy to be produced by wind power." He is an idiot!
According to Frederick D. Palmer, president of the Greening Earth Society and chief executive officer of Western Fuels Association, "it is incredible that the Clinton administration has just now noticed—after seven-plus years in office—that we have an electricity shortage." Part of the problem is Vice President Gore’s fixation on carbon dioxide emissions "as the sole criteria for energy policy in the United States." As a result, the Clinton-Gore administration has done nothing to respond to the rising need for electrical power because it is generated, in large part by coal. So the White House liars have been telling everyone it’s the utility’s fault for not building more capacity at the same time the Environmental Protection Agency is suing major utilities for not installing millions of dollars of more apparatus to further "clean" their emissions.
As Palmer points out, "The problem of electricity supply, at base, is that we are using up the capacity in existing power plants, including those that are coal-fired." This nation has to begin building new power plants. Lots of them. It hasn’t because those who run the nation’s utilities, when not being sued by the EPA, are reluctant to commit millions knowing the government will harass them every step of the way. If Al Gore is elected no new plants will be built and that is why you better start thinking about installing your own generator in the basement.
In his book, Earth in the Balance, Gore wrote that "higher taxes on fossil fuels" were "one of the logical first steps in changing our policies in a matter consistent with a more responsible approach to the environment." My friend, Dr. S. Fred Singer, points out that "Gore isn’t as excited as he used to be about this." A Houston Chronicle article quotes him as saying he no longer supports this. "This isn’t just a flip-flop from 1992; it’s a flip-flop from earlier this year when Gore proudly claimed to stand by everything in his book," notes Dr. Singer. Now Gore is going around saying "I have made it clear in this campaign that I am not calling for any tax increase on gasoline, on oil, on natural gas, or anything else." And some people want to vote for this contemptible liar and hypocrite.
The Greens hate the notion that people are using power for just about any reason. It "pollutes" according to their warped ideology. The Pew Research Center for People and the Press says 79% of Americans have cable or satellite television; 59% have home computers; 16% have DVD players. Add in all the rest who have radios, refrigerators, electric can openers, lights and other useful devices, and you have a totally wired American utterly dependent on electricity.
In April of this year, the Western Fuels Association filed suit in Wyoming federal district court against the Turning Point Project, Friends of the Earth, Earth Island Institute, Ozone Action, Rainforest Action Network, and the International Center for Technology Assessment, charging them with "commercial defamation" under Section 43 of the Lanham Act (15 U.S.C. ~ 1125). The Association says its advocacy and coal supply business are both damaged the Turning Point Project’s publication of a full-page advertisement in The New York Times and materials on its website that advocates the elimination of coal use in electricity generation!
On December 13, 1999, an ad estimated to have cost $97,000 pictured a mosquito under the headline "Global Warming—how will it end?" Western Fuels Association’s complaint is that the ad makes false and misleading factual representations regarding the effects of carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels, specifically coal, and an alleged human-induced overheating of the earth’s atmosphere. Remember, too, that President Clinton, using the Antiquities Act, has put one of this nation’s richest, untapped supplies of high-grade coal off limits to use when he created the Escalante Staircase National Park in Utah.
At some point, this case will go to trial and then the defendants will have to conclusively prove that there is any global warming. They will have to prove that coal-based generation of electricity is a danger to the environment. What are the odds of that? Zero! Then maybe this cabal of radical Green organizations will experience a blackout of their own?
