American made BP rifles

I was asked to edit a question I posted in the thread about CVA and to start a whole new thread instead of hijacking the old one.:p

Who, or what companies, make BP rifles here in the USA? I'm looking to buy or assemble a left handed flintlock after I transfer out to CA. I have been thinking about buying a Traditions or Lyman flintlock. I wish T/C made something for lefties, oh well. The suggestion has been made that I learn to shoot right handed, I can, but will never be as good at it as shooting left handed. Among other things my left eye is 20/20, my right eye is not.

The Lyman Deerstalker and Great Plains rifles both seem to be fairly attractive rifles, the Traditions less so.

For commercial Traditionals, you have it pegged just about right and If I were given a choice between Lyman and Traditions, I'd go with Lyman but neither is made in the USA. There are many excellent custom shops and you will pay. As far as kits, you could put one of these together yourself by buying the individual components. That's what the old boys use to do. Go to Dixie and see what is available. I feel it's worth the effort. Last fall, ran into a good Penn. Squirrel rifle in .32, left handed and once in awhile, you will run into these. Just have to get out thar and look. Again, last fall I ran into three very nice older CVA's and these were kit guns. Not a bad price either. I often run into some left handed models but not often. Work with the hand you were delt and in your case, given. Not appreciated when you try to sell a left handed gun, you can't get anything for it and have to pay too much to buy one.

Thompson Center is the only major manufacturer I know of making guns in the USA.

The Lyman Great Plains Rifle is a great rifle, but, Hecho en Espana.

If you wished that you could buy a left handed TC,
then this is even better for about the same price.
Look at all the great features including a Green Mountain
barrel, L&R lock, different barrel lengths, rifling twists and
calibers.
Plus it's all U.S.A. made and for lefties to boot! :)

Click on "RMC Blackpowder Flintlock Rifles" in the left hand
column of the following page for the model listings.

Here's a 30 second Youtube video about it:

It looks like there's a single and a double trigger option that uses a similar trigger guard with a front taper.
On the double trigger model it does look like the guard is a little bit too tapered in front, but the front trigger is also straighter, slightly lower and not as curved as the back set trigger is.
However the shape of the guard with the single trigger looks to be just fine in the video. The single trigger seems to allow plenty of room to use a gloved finger during winter hunting and shooting. :)

Had to go back and read your post to make sure I "stayed" on point. I know that TC has made left handed models but not sure this is true today or what they culd do. A few weeks back, one of my "BuckSkinner" buddies mentioned that he had a left handed side-lock. I cannot recal if it was a Hawkin Style or Ranegade, or flinter/percussion. If you are interested, I can give you his phone number and you can work out the details with him.

Pahoo,

I'd be interested but not until after I'm settled in at my new place in CA. The other problem with that is that the only FFL in about a 50 mile radius works in a local hardware store and is not interested in doing anything other than ordering guns to be sold through the store. I'm not sure what the law are concerning the transfer of BP rifles in CA.

What area of CA are you movin' to or near DM1333?

The Mowrey Co. in Texas made USA rifles...
The Mowrey .50 on the right is a copy of the Ethan Allen that started mfg. in 1835. The one on the left is a Tennessee Poorboy .50 is a left hand caplock wich can also be had in a flintrock...see if DGW Dixie Gunworks is sellin' them again, I heard they were. by Miroku Japan, with probly USA steel :O)
Comes in kit or finnished form. I wouldn't point you there ifin it wasn't worth the time a day to tell ya to buy one. Even if ya can find a good used one they be worth it.
No FFL or registration with BP guns in California. Strictly over the counter sales...see ya when ya get here...

Smokin_Gun,

I'm moving to Fort Bragg. I spent 4 years there before and am pretty happy to be moving back again. Mendocino County is very liberal but also pretty gun friendly except for the complete lack of dealers. Unless things have changed there are only 4 in the county, a hardware store, two small shops (one of which I may completely ignore) and a Big 5.

Well you won't be too far from Palmdale, CA ... L.A. County... ifin your ever lookin' for a place in the Angeles National Forest to camp and shoot let me know our Club Range is up there...

400 miles is closer than 500 miles to Oraville, ... have headed up the to work/fish with a friend a mine for a week or so at a time now and again. A 1000 miles on my bike ain't a bad ride at all. Carried a Rem C&B in my saddlebags bags ... never know up in Black Bart's territory of the Gold country.

I guess close is relative to your space and time...

Has the Cap'n approved this steel? :)

I guess LH guns are not all that easy to come by, not to mention LH flintlock. I wonder if dm1333 ever found a gun?
