American Arms .22

My 1st post. Have the opportunity to buy a .22 semi/American Arms/made in USA/ early 90's mfg/ appears to be alloy slide/receiver/ condition-v.good/price-cheap. Been out of the "pistol" hobby for a while. This is to be a backpack carry and/or wife carry while horseback riding in the hills behind our place. I'm NOT expecting super quality or accuracy, BUT, is this a known "jammamatic" or absolutely rotten in accuracy? Not to be pushy, but, I kind of need an answer in the next day or so. Looking through the gun papers....a spare magazine would cost me about half of what I'm payin' for the whole gun!.....THANKS in advance for any info.....SgtBob

Morning Sgt,
I've owned 2 of the American Arms pistols in my time. One was the small "PPK-like" version and the other was a small 1911-like model.

I don't remember them being terribly inaccurate, but they were not target pistols either. They seemed to be fairly reliable for about 50-100 rounds, but got dirty quick and needed a good cleaning.

You may be better served by a used S&W revolver or used Ruger semi-auto for just a few more dollars.

Good luck,
Joe

Hi,

For carry I bought a PX-22 last year. It's a PPK style but almost as small as a TPH. In the course of a couple hundred rounds it has never jammed with any ammo and been surprisingly accurate. I decided to live with the single mag. The gun is very small, light and has several active and passive safeties.

The only gun I might also look for like this is a FEG Mark II in .22. This is a larger, all steel PPK clone of superb quality. It would last lifetimes, but is bigger and heavier.

Thanks for the replies so far. Kingknives, this is the scaled down .45 lookalike..............SgtBob

They are nice little plinkers I think, but not much more.

You didn't really say why you would be carrying them.

If it's for small game on the trail, you may be better off with a more accurate .22, like a Ruger semi-auto or revolver, or something similar from S&W or Taurus.

If it's for self defense (two legged or four legged animals) you may do better with a similar brand in .38 or .357. You can also use larger shot shells in a couple of chambers if snakes are a concern. You could find a good used revolver of the above brands at a pretty good price.

Just my 2 cents. Take care

Joe

...Looks like I'll be buying it. Probably will pick up a used revolver for the wife to carry(she's not a fan of semi-auto's....Thanks again for the input...SgtBob
