My local dealer carries ammo made by a company called "American Ammunition". It comes in a clear plastic package with a blue label. It is a couple of dollars cheaper than the other brands so I have been using it for plinking. Today, when I was shooting some in my .45, I noticed that the necks of some cases looked like they were torn and patched together before being boxed. The brass was dented easily by my extractor too. I also found out that although they look like FMJ, they are actually copper coated. This being similar to a copper plating like on a .22LR. I became very disappointed in this ammo today and I have vowed to never buy it again. Has anyone else had experience with this stuff?

That stuff is made in Florida and is not the best quality ammo by any means, IMO. I bought a box or two in .45 ACP a while back to try them out (like you, because of the price) but I was not impressed. Seemed to be weaker than the Remington UMC which I've heard is underpowered, but this is just how they felt to me. I don't have a chronograph to do any testing. I noticed the brass bent up easy and I could put a dent in the bullets by simply pressing a fingernail against them.

I think I'll stick to PMC, Speer Lawman or S&B for cheap ammo from now on.

Stay away from it! Check over on GT, a guys wife had a a kB with it in her G19. When I was on the phone with Ruger they had advised me not to use American Ammo as they use WEAK CASES.

There have been several recent threads re American Ammo (not to be confused with Federal's American Eagle) all of which have indicated the stuff is bad -- perhaps downright dangerous.

I would not use it, ever!

I'm a little surprised that the brass might be softer, although it's possible. What I have found is that I can't reload with it. The .45 acp cases are .006" thicker than standard Win, Speer, Federal, you name it, which equalls .012" over the entire diameter. Using .452" bullets, the cases are noticeably larger where the bullet is than my other reloaded ammo. The stuff won't feed in my Springfield, which, though not especially accurate, will typically feed anything I put in. Good thing I only have approx 50 cases in my stockpile, which I've just about weeded out and thrwn away.

I had the same problem reloading the cases. The cases with lead swc would not go into my case gauge. The problem seems to be a bulge where the base of the SWC seats, probably due to case thickness.

Unfortunately I purchased 1000 rounds of the stuff. Have gone through about 200 rounds. The ammo is not accurate and jammed in my G30. My Sig 220 shot it without problems.

My recommendation is to stay away from this ammo, it is poor quality and not reloadable.

I ran some thru my 1911, attracted by the price, and regretted it-absolutely the filthiest ammunition I've ever used. I had so much of a mess to clean up after 100 rounds that it took me twice as long to clean up my gun as it does with, say, white box Winchester.

I don't reload, so I don't know about case strength that other posts have mentioned, but man, what do they put IN the cases, sprays a mix of coal dust and lead thru your whole gun!

I bought two boxes of it a few months ago. I was getting at least 2-3 jams per magazine with my SIG 220. I never even bothered with the second box, lesson having been learned.

I'm into reloading now, and any cases stamped "Amerc" are promptly sent to the trash can.

I've shot a lot of it in .38 Special, and a good bit of it in .45 ACP. I've had five squibs in the .45 ACP. I've got three boxes of the .45 left, and that's it for me.

Junk. Nothing but junk.

What't the olde saying, "You generally get what you paid for?" No flames now, I have relearned that lesson all toooo many times.

I no longer use Wolf, UMC, PMP, CCI, etc. The hard way I have learned to standardize on S&B or Georga Arms for the range, and Fiocchi for carry. Yes, there are other good rounds out there, but these work for me. I order them in 1000 rounds lots and keep ahead with a good stockpile.

What sort of problems did you encounter with PMP (the South African stuff)? I have used about 500 rounds of it, and found it to be a pretty good and inexpensive target ammo.

My sig-pro has never had a problem feeding any ammo i run thru it. Although feeding the american brand was not a problem, the accuracy was horrible. Normally at 10-15 feet i can shoot a one inch group with no problems if i take my time and aim. But with this crap i was all over the place. It made me look bad in front of my lady friend. American ammo gives "american's" a bad name. I bet theres not one american working in that plant.

CRAP !
