American AK rifles....any good?

Gentlemen,

Does anyone here have any experience with the AK47's you see advertised in Shotgun News and elsewhere that are made with enough US parts to be exempt from BATF import regulations?

Are they any good? How do they compare to most of the imported ones you see at gun shows?

Thanks in advance for the help...

I have had experience with a few. I prefer the SAR series over the others. The only problem that I have had out of any of them is "trigger slap". This is caused by sloppy trigger parts. The problem is easily corrected with a common dremel tool. You just have to take a little of the excess metal off of one part and you are good to go. Overall they are very good rifles.

Only one note: Avoid the Maadi rifles, they are junk.

word of warning, if it says Hesse, anywhere on it, avoid it like the plague. Century arms stuff is hit and miss, look them over well, avoid the crooked ones, and you'll be set.

Egyptian Maadis are atrocious for case separations, rim tears, and other destruction of brass. WAY too hard a mechanism. They also don't work well in sand.

There was in indepth article in G&A annual 1998 that discussed them.
A socialist nation (Sweden, IIRC), in classic capitalist fashion managed to sell at a profit a bead weapon design, the factory and all parts...

All post ban AK's with the exception of thumbholed Mak 90's and SA 85's or ten round only models need to have the required # of US parts.I think its 5 parts. The Vepre Ak's require US floorplates and followers, they already have the US fire control parts.

The Maadi's tear up brass becuase they were designed(like all AK's)to use steel casings instead of brass. Why steel?Because it's cheaper than brass in that part of the world.

You're right.I haven't had to check the law lately because all the good stuff has been banned here in Kali,I guess I'm a little rusty about laws in the free states.
