America is not going to return to its roots.

The general trend of the US throughout history is that the powers of the state increases. The power of business, from the tobacco monopolies to the robber barons to coca cola, has remained fairly steady. And the position of the individual gets slowly worse.

Given this, it is probably unrealistic to think that gun legislation or indeed any other legislation is going to return to the founding fathers ideals.

I think that permission slips from the government, for example CCW permits or full auto registration, are going to stay and that the best the 2nd amendment can hope for is the removal of cosmetic laws like the AW ban of ’94.

What do you think?

You are probably right, and I don't see CCW permits,as long as they are shall issue, as being a problem. Nor do I see FA registration as an issue. Yes, I see the 86 bans and the 94 ban, not to mention the various state bans, as more of an issue.

You seem to be implying the possibility we have reached a "steady state". I'd say rather that we will continue to deteriorate and the state will continue to accumulate power and exercise increasingly ham-handed control until we are, essentially, some form of dictatorship. At that point it becomes merely a question of how long before people rise up and throw off that yoke and what form of governance comes after.

This of course assumes we have not reached a stage in humanity's devolution that we never rise up again. It also doesn't touch on the historical liklihood that whatever comes after will be no better and may even be worse.

I'm afraid you're right—except that the so-called "assault weapons" ban has already established the legal principle that some guns are too dangerous in and of themselves for civilians to be trusted with them. More bans will follow, then more, then more, then...

It's been my experience that the pendulum does swing both ways with or without force. But, as far left and right as it swings, it still seeks its balance in the center.

I predict that firearms 'restrictions' will loosen considerably in the wake of the inevitable attacks that this country will suffer on our soil in the near term.
We will see this first in the border regions, the suburbs and other areas where the 'LEO availability per square mile ratio' demands that the common folk arm for their own protection. Once several malls, schools or highly populated work sites are hit (God forbid), Joe and Jane
Lunchbox will rise up and demand to protect them and theirs, regardless of .gov restrictions. The politicians will go along because they'll be voted out otherwise.
We will rediscover the true meaning of a 'well regulated militia'.

This happened around here as recently as during the 'sniper' rampage. When they came out of NoVa down 95 and began shooting folks around Richmond, you couldn't find a shotgun, AK, SKS or AR for sale in a 3 county area...all sold out. The pendulum is swinging back in our direction.

CC permits are nothing but a trojan horse; the taxation and control of honest people. If you accept these things as irreversible - look forward to being disarmed.

Of course America isn't going to return to its roots. Why would you ever think that it would?

As for control returning to the Founding Father's ideals, there seems to be a lot of debate as to exactly what those ideals actually were. No doubt gun control people have one view and pro gun folks have the other view and both claim to be right, but neither has come up with much except for the vaguely written 2nd Amendment, that like other parts of the Constitution were written in a manner that allows for a lot of interpretation. That is one of the benefits of how the Constitution was established and what has made it functional through time.

Would returning to the ideals of our Founding Fathers also return us to slavery and inequality of the sexes? There are fundamental interpretations and literal interpretations.

Why would you think that continuing changes in our legal system would not be what the Found Father's had in mind? There never stopped at just the Constitution. Soon thereafter came amendments and changes we call the Bill of Rights. So, our Founding Fathers set the precedent that changes in the Constitution and hence changes in the rights of the individual were not fixed, but could be continually changed.

Change...

So the deer and the antelope are not going to return to the subdivisions either. Whaddya expect?
