Ambidextrous safety for Springfield 1911

I am left handed and have a Springfield loaded 1911 and plan to have an ambidextrous thumb safety installed. Ive narrowed my choice to a Chip McCormick because its the least expensive. Wilsons, Kings and other are almost twice as much. Are they worth it?

I have had the holster nudge the safety off when the pistol was cocked&locked. It is a scarey thing to find when you are expecting a locked firearm.

I have been told that grinding the off-side release down to a standard military bump is a good protection against this (and it is still usable if you must shoot weak hand).

TJA - I wouldn't have any hesitation in using a McCormick safety. It should be as well made as the ones from Wilson, King's, Brown, etc. I doubt if Chip would make or sell anything he wouldn't use himself. His magazines are, IMHO, every bit as good as Wilson's at about half the price and are made to stand up to the rigors of competition. I would expect no less from his safety.

If you're not a little upset with the way the world is going, you're not paying attention.

Send that gun off to Wilson (quick turnaround and one of the best)(or someone like him) for your ambi installation.

DO NOT let a hack do it!

I have installed Wilson, C&S and Mueschke ambi's in my guns. The Wilsons required a lot of fitting on the inside, but were good-to-go in terms of finish. The C&S safety was easy to fit, but looked like it had just dropped out of the mold (HOURS of grinding/polishing before it was allowed on my gun). The Mueschke is more like a drop-in part, requiring little fitting, but somewhat loose. I really dislike the appearance of the McCormick part, but it is certainly attractively priced. In order of comfort/function, I would rate: C&S, Wilson hi-ride, old Wilson, stock.

Regardles who you go with watch the strong side safety, most left handed shooters will ingage the sfety with thier left index finger or nuckle, or it is too hard to engage the week side, If you cannot find a safety I sell one that is a comb. of a narrow strong side for clearance and a wide weak side for poss. engagement.SC
quote:
Originally posted by TJA:
