So a friend of mine just invited me to the Ladies Night at the local indoor range she works at. "Sure!" I say, and head on down. Lo and behold, I'd left my CCW on the desk as I left home (eek!), so just had a single-six I'd brought along. AAaand.. a couple rifles behind the seat in my rig.

This indoor range can handle rifles, so in I brought an AR-15. More than anything else for "show and tell." And you know what? I've just become convinced that it's the perfect thing for getting the fence-sitters to come the rest of the way over to the dark side. The wonderful housewife-y woman we handed this to had this series of reactions..


"Is this thing really legal??? You can own one of these??"

"Well.. okay...."

"Hey.. this is so light.. kinda neat!"

"Well that was neat! What? Rapid fire? I can't do that, no..well... okay.. I'll give it a try.."

I think the best part is handing 'em something that besides being easy to use and easy to handle is that it IS so similar to the M-16 everyone and her sister can recognize. Once they realize it's not great shakes to learn to use the thing, and it ain't gonna go off and massacre children on it's own... all the other arguments start to make more sense.

After the .22... I'm seriously starting to think that an AR is the ultimate "introduce the newbies" rifle.

When my one-night stand was still around after a week and officially became my girlfriend, I insisted on showing her how to UNload all my weapons for safety's sake.

Eventually we went shooting. She liked the .45 except for the noise. She didn't like bolt actions, or autoloading rifles or any shotgun.

After she became my wife and I finished my AR build, we went shooting again. She likes lever actions and revolvers--she prefers a mechanism she can see work.

Then I handed her the AR.

CRACK! "Was that a misfire? It didn't kick much...that's ALL it kicks? Oh, I want one of these."

And there went the money for my second pre-ban. Actually, her pre ban. Still working on the purple one for her. She wants one in bright purple. Got some of it done already.
