Well good for you.

Unfortunately you've left the rest of us in the dark.

Could you elaborate, or provide a link to the story, or something?

Go to The Violence Policy Center. Scroll down to the bottom of the main page; there's an Amazon ad.

A pity; I used Amazon pretty regularly. No more.

quote:
It has come to my attention that you are supporting the Violence Policy Center, as evidenced by your ad placed on their site at http://www.vpc.org .

This organization is dedicated to removing my Right to keep and bear arms, which is recognized by the 2nd Amendment. I will not patronize a business that supports an organization dedicated to the infringement of a basic human Right. I will encourage my wife to also *not* patronize you. While criminal misuse of firearms is tragic, taking firearms from the law-abiding is / would be much more tragic. This is historically and statistically proveable to anyone willing to review this issue with reason and logic instead of emotion.

http://www.bn.com is now a bookmarked "favorite" in my "shopping" folder in Internet Explorer. Amazon is gone.

I bought one book from them (Hatchers Notebook) and they spammed me for six months before I could get them to quit. I had to use a big mallet on them and go to their upstream. So I don't do any business with them anyway and made sure they knew I'd never be back.

They wont care, we gun owners are all stupid, racist coon asses from the South who can't read anyway.

Here is my note:

I think it is disgusting that you are supporting the VPC. After any investigation into the facts, it would be apparent that this organization is little more than a group of misdirected individuals who would rather ban inalienable rights than address root causes of a violent society.

As you wrap yourselves with the American Flag remember that you are next. First Amendment Rights are guaranteed by the same piece of paper you are working to destroy.

It is not too far off where the local, independent Bookstore owners will start their lawsuits with you to restrict your trade rights because they can not compete. You will grasp for your rights then. Why not protect them now. Why not entice the 80 Million Gun owners out there to use your site. It is the same group of people that you are supporting that want classics like "Huck Finn" and works by Shakespeare banned. It is also these zealots that want Bugs Bunny cartoons censored. Place your loyalty elsewhere.

Regards,

Dan Huben

Not sure if I'm remembering correctly but Amazon has a promotion where if you put an Amazon link on your website and if anyone follows that link to Amazon then purchases something then the original site gets 5% of sale proceeds. This is why you see the Amazon link everywhere (including many of the pro-gun sites that I visit).

Still, if we can get Amazon to pull their link....

Greg

GredL, This is not the case with the VPC link. I've seen those links that people put on their webpages to direct you to Amazon-- they are usually for a specific product they are promoting that can be found on amazon. An example would be if VPC were pointing members to a book advancing these agenda that amazon just happened to sell. That would be different, and perhaps excusable.

However, this is different: the amazon link on VPC quite distinctly says "IN ASSOCIATION WITH". None of the kinds of links I mentioned above say this.

Boycott amazon.

I'm always happy to help bash VPC when they deserve it, along with their supporters, but ... I think Greg L is right on this score. When you link to Amazon.Com, you can link specific products and / or their site as a whole.

Please see the email below. This is what Amazon.Com sends to organizations that participate in their 'Associates' program. They do this for pro, and well as anti-self defense organizations. Honest.

I'm not a VPC fan either but Greg is right. Amazon will let anyone put the link just like that on their site. If you want to you can go to the link to Amazon from www.ammoman.com and someone on our side gets the percentage.

TT

ditto above.

I used to work at a pretty big internet retail shop, with an affiliate program similar to Amazon's. Similar to as in "ripped a page right out of their book." Basically, anybody and his dog could get on that list, as long as they had a website to put the link on -- the folks in charge of the program didn't even screen who signed up -- though as I recall a couple porn sites were later "requested" to pull the link back to us.

The "in affiliation with" is basically meaningless.

So.. short version -- Amazon likely ain't funding or supporting VPC in any way. Now, as to what the folks running Amazon think and do with their own money.. got no idea.

Here's the reply from amazon.com

quote:
]Thank you for writing to us about the Violence Policy Center's
participation in the Associates Program. Theirs is just one of the
hundreds of thousands of web sites that have joined over the past 3
years. The program is designed to allow individuals and organizations
with a Web presence to recommend books, music CDs and videos from
their own points of view to their constituency. Associates create
links to their featured titles at Amazon.com or to Amazon.com's home
page and are paid a percentage of any resulting sales as compensation
for recommending our services.

Amazon.com does not endorse the viewpoints expressed by our individual
Associate sites, nor could we given the range of opinions they
express. Our Associates include viewpoints on all sides of virtually
every major political, social and religious issue. In fact, we have
many Associates with pro-gun Web sites. Our role as a bookseller is
to bring people into contact with the entire spectrum of ideas in
print, and let the ideas speak for themselves.

The issue of gun control is a hot topic and we believe that people on
both sides of the issue should be allowed to express their opinions.
A search of Amazon.com's store will reveal that we carry many titles
related to both sides of the gun control issue and underscores our
commitment to freedom of expression on both sides.

We hope you'll understand that our goal in working with an Associate
is not to provide support to their point of view, but simply to
provide interested readers with access to all the books in our
catalog.

Best regards,
