am thinking of a PSL...

Hey guys :)

I am thinking of getting a PSL...

I really want something in the 7.62x54r caliber, and its between the Mosin and the PSL.

I love both rifles, but I find myself lusting after the PSL more than the Mosin...

has anyone here had much experience with the PSL? ups, downs, pro's, cons et al

Thanks guys :)

I had one for a few years. My only complaints were the barrel being so thin, it got very hot very fast, the creepy AK trigger, and the ugly jams when the case rims would get out of line in the magazine.

It was very accurate, cheap to shoot (when fed old surplus), and fun.

If you get one, stick to 147 gr ammo. The heavier stuff will eventually do ugly things to your receiver.

With Mosins as cheap as they are, why not just go ahead and grab one? My M39 is a great gun, and it was salvaged from a pawn shop "bargain rack".
I also lust for a PSL, but have never took the plunge. Go ahead with getting one so I can hear how it does!

yah, its a tough decision...

I think i will get the Mosin for now, but dammit, that PSL is sexy.
Even with its skinny barrel.
How awesome would it be to get one with a medium/heavy barrel?

Red Star,

Get a Saiga with a 24" barrel and do the conversion. Call it a "Saiganov" and be happy. The Saiga barrels are decently thick.

a saiga with a 24 inch barrel????

I have a saiga with the 20 and kind of Drag-ed it up. I didnt know they made them with a 24 inch barrel though...

and, i really want something in 7.62x54r Im pretty sure they dont make saigas in that caliber.

have both and never really use either. the psl is way cooeler, but you need to stick with teh lite ball stuff or you will shake it to pieces.

The PSL is what...about $750 these days? You'd be much better off getting a CMP Garand for $595 and some ammo.;)

I didnt know they made them with a 24 inch barrel though...

Perhaps he's referring to the Saiga 308 with a 22" barrel.

Ya'll are right, the longest Saiga 308 barrel is 22", the Saiga 12 guage has the 24" barrel. I stopped shooting 7.62x54r a while back just to simplify my ammo situation, ballistic wise there isn't really any difference downrange so I kept the 308s to shoot.

mine

Yeah, I've got one. Its the SSG-97 version and I bought it used 2-3 yrs ago. Has POSP 8x on it. I could not resist the Drag look. But, the rifles are actually more like big AK's internally.

I've made quite a few posts, and don't want to rehash too much. Quality ammo is the issue. Mine shoots best with reloads, but brass has gotten scarce. Some guys report good results w/ light ball surplus and Wolf Gold.

Last December I made up a range card for it out to 600 yds. The rifle consistently stayed about 2 MOA all the way out. Three rd groups can go smaller, but more than 5 and the skinny barrel heats and accurracy seems to go.

Mine is reliable with factory ammo, but my loads are generally single fed. I have hunted the rifle for deer on occasion but have not killed one w/ it.......yet.

The 8x POSP has held up so far , but the clamp and mount screws can be twitchy.
