Am I right on this Scope question?

I'm going to shoot 1000 yards for the first time. I will be shooting my (pristine) 1952 Model 70 in 270. My scope is a Nikon Prostaff 4X12X40 BDC. I've been working out the BDC circles with different sight in distances.

The Nikon Spot On Ballistics porgram says that with a 100 yard zero, set your scope to shoot 304.08 inches high at 999 yards. I'm shooting a Hornady 140 grain SST in front of 58 grains of Reloader 22. MV is an average of 2925.

When I left the range the last time I set the scope to zero at 100 yards. It was spot on. It figured to me that I would have to use the BDC circles to shoot at 1000. I thought I did not have enough "clicks" to compensate for a 300 inch drop.

I think I was wrong about that. Here is why. I set the rifle in the rest, marked the starting point, and started turning the elevaton. It did 4 complete circles of 48 clicks plus 30 more before I ran out of elevation. That is a total of 222 clicks. If each click (1/4 inch at 100) is 2 1/2 inches at 1000yards then I figure I have plenty of clicks to shoot at 1000 yards without using the BDC circles.

304 inches divided by 2.5 equal 122 clicks for 1000 yards from a 100 yard zero.

Am I right?

I dont know what elevation/ atmospheric conditions youll be shooting at/in but using 2721 ft for elevation, 60 degrees F, and a humidity of 40 it tells me to dope for 115 clicks or put it on 6x and use the post for 1000 yards. The Info it gives you is pretty darn accurate if you know how to use it. I was hitting praire dogs yesterday at 400+ with my new Nikon prostaff 4-12x40 and Savage 12 FV. I sighted it in for 100 and used the info the ballistics calculator gave me.

nathaniel he is in florida most your talking 300 400 ft most likely less.

by my cal. its 312.4 at 29.8 MOA X 4 = 119.2 :D

I didnt know where he was going shooting. Some people cant get 1000 yard ranges in their own state. I was just showing him how different altitudes and conditions will change what the bullet does. If he uses the spot on ballistics calculator he can customize it for where ever he shoots. Its alot easier to use something that tells where to shoot than to try to figure it out. but then again some people like to make things difficult.

i got yah :D i was just letting you know where he is at. florida as so pretty open places so i would say he well be shooting there but i could be wrong

Thanks for the replies.

I live in a FL panhandle North Florida Gulf Coast beach and will be shooting at a new 1000 range opening about 2 hours or so North of me in way West Georgia.

If the elevation is more that 60 feet, I'll be surprised.

I do try to put all the variables in the program and I've even played with the wind. Looks like a little bit at a 1000 yards is something to really contend with.

I consider myself a damn good shot. I was an Aircrewman so I was really schooled with pistols. I think I'm better with a rifle. I know I damn well like rifles a lot more.

But, I am I right about the "clicks" thing in my original post.

Oops! Just read the thread again. Thanks for the affirmatives.
