Am I getting ripped here (AR-15)?

I have a Bushmaster AR-15 on layaway down at my local gunstore, XM15E2S 20"Hbar. The gun comes with A1 sights and is being billed as NEW. The web page lists A2 sights as standard. I have no immediate plans to scope this and I want the best sights (stock) possible, am I being misled, and are A2 sights better than A1's?

Dan

A1 sights are fiddle proof (you need a tool to adjust windage & elevation)

A2 sights have big external knobs that you can rotate while bored.

Dan,

First of all, do you want the A2 sights? If the gun was advertised by your local gunshop as being an XM15E2S 20Hbar WITH A2 upper, then it should come with the A2 sights. The A2 uppers generally cost a tad bit more than the A1s, but not by much. If you were told A2, but you'll receive A1 instead, then that's up to you on whether or not you've been burned. Personally, if I paid for an A2 sight, then I'd expect nothing other than an A2 sighted firearm.

I agree with dz concerning the A1 sights. They're as solid as a rock and you won't have to worry about a "wandering" zero. However, I have yet to encounter a "wandering" zero with my A2s. As to which is better, that is all a matter of personal preference. I prefer the A2s because I like to rotate the big external knobs when I'm bored :)

The A2 sights let you dial in the range (from something like 300 metere to 800 meters) so they're of advantage if you shoot at several different ranges. However, the range scale is only approximate and is calibrated for military loadings.

Also, I believe the A2 rear sight windage adjustment is graduated in 1/2 MOA per click, and the old A1 rears are 1 MOA per click. Someone is sure to correct me if I'm wrong.

Does that part number specify A2 sights?

I think I am ok with it as long as the guy is being honest, I bought the gun on "looks" and learned more about them after the deposit, my fault, but I just don't want to compound that boo boo

how much are they charging you .i do know that at gunshows the realy low priced ars all have the older sites .ive seen bushmaster s go for as little as 599 with the older sites.
i have the same model you say your getting xm15e2s 20 hb and i paid 815 bucks out the door.fantastic rifle BTW.

DZ is correct. Bushmaster still makes a post ban model with A1 sights (four actually).

I was just going to say, be very careful when purchasing Bushmasters (or any dark gun) at this time. Reason being that there is a flood of product in the market right now and the prices are (or at least should be) at rock bottom. Many bargains to be had in the used market. New guns are selling around cost and are just being used as lost leaders or turned for cash. It's time to buy now. Just be cautious.

The Bushmasters have come with A2 type lowers and A1 type uppers as well as any other configuration you could think of.

I wouldn't think ya got ripped unless it is an upper with triangular handguards, A1 sights, and a teardrop type forward assist.:D

There are some gun stores out there still asking $1000 plus for a BM, which is outrageous. You should get yours for no more than $800. max.

$790 + tax.

The manager of the shop got about twenty of these in last year and sold them all except this one- mainly around the election.

Functionality, is the A2 system better than (more accurate, adjustible, ...) than the A1?

Having grown up with the A1 I like it better. More monkey proof and quite adequate.

Pre-Ban uppers have no value over post ban uppers.

"triangular front stocks would be a pre ban unless some hack installed them.so how can that be a rip off."

Because you cannot legally put an original preban upper on a postban lower. You would have to at least mill off the bayonnet lug. As for the "birdcage" or prong type flash supressor, I'm not sure if you could leave them on. According to the info given, the lower is a post ban.

Regardless, I meant it as a joke.

Hube,

The uppers are just as reliable. The major differences are the sighting systems. With the A2 sights you can turn an adjustment wheel for elevation. That can make shooting distant targets easier by allowing you to hold normally on a target. The A2 model also has an integrated brass deflector. Unless you are a lefty, it really doesn't matter much. The A2 also has a round forward assist button instead of the teardrop type. Both styles work equally well.

The price you mentioned isn't bad. I would be sure you want that specific setup before purchasing it. The A2 uppers are a bit easier to trade if you aren't exactly happy with it or want a flatop upper later. With the A1 upper you may lose a bit in the trade. If you are like me..you won't be happy without a flatop!..thats my next project.
