Am I crazy for wanting a Vektor CP1?

Saw Kiesler's ad in Shotgun News for Gen 2 Vektor CP-1 for $299 and I want to get one. Called Kiesler's and they don't have them in yet and they don't know when they'll arrive. Saw the Vector in gun magazines several years ago when they were 1st imported and liked the looks of this strange pistol. Wonder how the gen 2 pistols are different from the 1st batch? Am I crazy or what?

Short answer "no" with an "if", long answer "yes" with a "but"...

Seriously, I have no experience, and have only read an article a few years back which I don't remember a word of. All I know is what it looks like and BARF! Not to say that you can't find it appealing, of course. Please find one in a shop and check it out first. That $300 can buy alot of good stuff.

1st Gen pistols neglected to install any kind of firing pin safety. If dropped muzzle-first, they'd kinda go off. Thus, they were recalled.

Jammomatic, Senor Jammista, Von Jammenstein, Jammo lama Jam Jam, Jammorooski. I knew a gentleman who struggled with one at one of the ranges I frequent. The gas port thing stayed clogged up and the jams were plenty.

I would certainly proceed with caution.
One article that I read talked about the proper procedure for cleaning these guns.
I don't recall the exact facts, but I believe if you tried to take it apart in the wrong order, it had to be shipped to the factory for repair.
I think it had to do with trying to take it apart without pulling the trigger, or not cleaning it after 200 rounds, I don't know.
It was the strangest thing I had ever heard of.

jackdripper - i don't think you're crazy at all. i think is is very cool that the engineers designed an action and then sent it off to a design studio to design the exterior package (sorta like the nikon F4 that they had "italia design" package)

the look reminded me a lot of the hk p9s

i just wish they were available in CA:(

I think so. But then again, maybe not. With the turmoil in SA nowadays, you might have trouble getting parts or service. This is based on the fact that another one of Denel's divisions, PMP, seems to have disappeared!!!

Not cleaning it after 200 rounds will give you a hard time taking it apart.

I must admit..watching "The One" made me wasnt a Vector more than watching "The Matrix" made me want a Desert Eagle.
but better judgment prevailed. They are neat looking though.

No, I don't think so.

I'm with you. I'd like to have one also. I think the design is cool. No sharp edges or protruding controls. At $299, I'd say go for it. If they've fixed the firing pin problem, I may join you.

Of course, I'm a sucker for the unusual. I want an HK VP70 also, (I know, I know. Worst trigger ever to grace a firearm, blah blah blah). It would only be a range shooter only, just like the CP-1 would be if they become available again, nothing else. I like having something nobody else either has or even seen.

JackDRipper, I believe the main diff btween 1st and 2nd gen is the safety. First Gen had a safety inside the triggerguard, the 2nd gen have a frame mounted safety ala 1911. Apparently the triggerguard safety was prone to be hit at the wrong time.

Makes a lot of sense if you want your gun collection to scream quantity rather than quality...seriously, I am always skeptical of any gun under $400. Sure there are some good shooters out there but really...save a few extra bucks and get a P7...now that's cool!

I saw somewhere recently that some Vectors were being recalled.
Might want to check recent issues of SGN or the American Rifleman before you jump.

What, like:

Many Ruger Semi's
A whole slew of S&W, Ruger and Taurus wheelguns
CZ75B, (The most copied design of all time)
Makarov, (The T34 Tank of pistol designs)
Many used Glock's
CZ52 or CZ70
Tokarev
Browning Buckmark
Ruger MKII variants
Ruger 10/22
Many AK47/74 variants
SKS's
Mauser 98's
Mosin Nagant's

Should I go on?

I don't disagree that P7M8 is among the finest pistols in the world. I own one also, (as well as a Walther P88, a CZ75, a CZ52 and a Makarov among many the other weapons in my collection). But to say that anything under $400 warrants skepticism is arrogance in it's highest form. Not everyone has the means to layout $800-$1200 for a pistol.

Cost is only one factor in my book, and a low one at that. Quality and reputation rate far higher to me. And, heaven forbid, design plays into my decisions also. The CP1 is watershed design. It's the "Edsel" of pistols.

As a primary pistol, the Vektor CP1 is probably not a very wise choice. As an addition to a collection and if they've fixed the potential "AD if dropped" problem and you can afford a frivolous purchase, why not?

Some folks jus don' unnerstan' gun collectin', it seems... ;)

I have handguns with MSRPs ranging from $50 to $2,300. Love 'em all. :D

Geez. ALL my guns were under $400... Now I feel bad....I think I'll go shoot my $120 Makarov to feel better...
