I recently bought a 3 piece aluminum rod for my SKS. I heard that these rods can gather gunk and become a file but if I kept the rod in a plastic bag and away from crap wouldnt that minimize the amout of gunk that it would gather im also cleaning from the reciever end of the rifle. Also if I wipe it down before use and make sure the joints are together snuggly would it be OK?

People have been using those things for years. Just wipe the rod down before and after you use it. You should anyway. Gotta keep the tools clean.

quintos: Didn't your SKS come with it's built in cleaning rod? (Stored below the barrel.)

And yes always clean from the breach end.

Regardless the 3-peice aluminum should be fine.

Patch Worm is the answer

I use this on my Anshutz, Mini-14 and on my Hamrelli. You don't have to worry about hurting anything. I use a fresh patch on every pass. The felt bobs should work on even the foulest bores. Unlike the Bore Snake, this does not have to be washed after every use.
