I have this little 514 w/ a Bubba'd scope mount that I picked up at a garage sale. The scope is an old Weaver Hawk and not very impressive. I'd like to replace the scope with irons so I can teach the kids to shoot.

Given the low cost of the rifle, what would be the most cost-efficient way to put irons on it? I was thinking either a Williams 5D-510 w/ a generic blade up front, or should I go with a Lyman globe up front and the standard leaf in the back? The peep & the globe, together, would be more than what I'm willing to spend.

What's wrong with this scope mount?;)

Good for you, teaching your kids how to shoot irons! Personally, I like the idea of the peep rear and a blade front. It will give you the longest sight radius, and should be very forgiving.

I should clarify that it is the scope, rather than the rifle or the mount, that isn't very impressive.

The rifle loves 40gr. Minimags (10 rnds, dime-sized @ 25m) and the mount, while not very pretty, seems to be very sturdy.
