I was in Gander in Kenosha today and saw a really nice condition used, pre-64 Model 70 for around $800!! I was tempted but then picked it up and the original, beautiful stock had been sawed off to REALLY shorten it (for a youngster?) and then had a badly done "lengthening" job done to it for an adult. Really took the air out of my sails. I know you can restock it but it was a 30-06 and I didn't want one of those. What people will do to guns they have no idea of the value.

While I detest such modifications, this isnt a deal breaker if all else is original. Factory stocks can be found fairly regularly. I do take exception to your reply that it was a 30-06 and you dont want one of those. I meet many collectors who will turn up there noses at a 30-06 model 70. This was the most popular chambering in this model for a reason. It works, period. If it wasnt a good chambering it wouldnt have been produced in such large numbers. Nobody wanted a 35 Remington or 300 Savage or the mearid of other less popular calibers. I shoot 94 Winchesters in 30-30 and buy them over the 32-40's and 38-55's because the 30-30 is a far better cartridge and that is why they are still produced and the other chamberings are not.

What are some tell tail signs of it being pre 64. I came across one that I know is old but not sure how old that I can get really cheap
