I have a chance to trade a kimbersteel compact for a kimber alloy compact, will the alloy wear out a lot faster? i was told they were good for only about 10000 rounds and then they were shot,is this true? would this be a good trade?Or would I be getting taken? thanks sheldon

Are alloy frames any good? Hmmm. Why don't you open a slightly larger can of worms, such as don't Glocks blow up or isn't Clinton a great person? :)

Seriously, I've given up on worrying about alloy frames. Properly designed frames handle stresses as well as steel frames. Kimber has tested their alloy frames to 20K rounds and up. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

YUP! A bar will choke on an alloy frame as easy as a steel one but the alloy will hold up better through the digestive track. Best thing to protect yourself from bars is to travel with a slower partner.

I carried 1911 style handguns for 26 years. Most of that time my favorite was the Lightweight Commander. I have cracked two and worn out one.
I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that Polymer is a better material for lightweight pistol frames than aluminum.

Someone help me out here...what's an 'alloy' frame? Alloy of what?

I mean, steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, but it seems like guns made of steel aren't considered to have alloy receivers.

you mean polymer/metal hybrids or something?
dog is confused...

You cracked two LW Commanders and wore another out?! What were you doing? It can't be shooting or you wouldn't have had time to sleep! You weren't the firearms instructor for a SEAL team, were you?

Buzz-Dave T speaks the truth.
I have gone through 2 LW Commanders. By "gone through" I mean that after about 5,000 rounds of full duty rds. a crack starts just forward of the slide stop pin hole .I did change recoil springs after every 2,000 rounds.
I've been asking all around and some quite authoritative people have told me both keep on shooting it till the crack affects function;or dump it now! 5,000 is really the magic number with the Colt LW Commander and I would like to hear from anyone who has experience of 10,000 or more with Kimber.
And before you ask, I'll say it now -I don't use Shok Buffs.(If you want to know why, I'll reply to that in another post.)
Dave T,could you give us more information on what was failing or cracking on your Commanders that made you decide to retire or sell them?
Shalom
