All you SAA fans!

Hi all, I've been saving for a Colt SAA for a while, but they just went up AGAIN in $, and I'm not paying that kind of dough, no matter what it says on the gun.

So, what I'm looking for is a nice SAA clone. Something that will work without smithing, since that is pretty much out of the question here. Preferably as identical as possible. No transfer bars, etc.
There is a "1st gen. 3 screw Ruger" in the classifieds, but I've never laid eyes on one.

Thanks in advance, I can't wait to get a "six-shooter"!

A Cimarron would be great for you. However, if you'll go over to the Cowboy Action Shooting section and check the archives there, you'll find plenty of comments about various SA revolvers.

I have a Cimarron (Uberti) that is about 5 years old and it has been very nice. I have been told some are soft, but have seen no evidence of that. The gun was not bad as it came, but of course I rebuilt and tuned it, so it is now a whole lot better.

The three screw Blackhawk has adjustable sights and not really in keeping with the tradional Colt. I have several Ruger Vaqueros (fixed sights), a handful or Blackhawks (again, adjustable) and a couple of real Colts. Since you are looking for tradition you are wise to avoid the Rugers. Much as I love mine they are not Colt/s nor will they ever have the heavenly feel of a Colt single action in the hand. However for serious shooting to Rugers are a stronger gun and far more durable.
Most (not all) of the Colt clones are manufactured by Aldo Uberti in Italy and shipped here to the various importers for final fit and finish. There in lies the rub. The guns are identical in every way other than the finish. The finish even on the more sorry example are better than the fit and finish on the last few Colts I've seen. As Mike said the Cimarron is one of the better ones. US Patent Firearms is reputed to be the best. But they are considerably higher in price.
Bottom line, if you are going to shoot it a lot strongly consider the Ruger. If you are collecting save until you find a reasonably priced second generation Colt. If you just want one to fondle and enjoy the single action experience with no real plans to sell it later or join CAS look to Cimarron or US Patent Firearms.

I was promised a Shortycicle and I want a Shortycicle!

The Cimarron by Uberti is probably the best true Colt clone available. I bought a 5 1/2" artillery version in .45 Colt last year and am perfectly happy with it.
