All purpose rifle

For HD and SHTF...where do you live? Suburban, country, inner city, wide open spaces? For me it is my vz-58, semi auto clone of the Czech military rifle. It doesn't hurt that it is just plain fun to shoot, too. I had an EOTech, bad things happened and it went away, going to try a different red dot on it later, but the iron sights work just fine, especially for home defense distances. A rifle would really be my last choice for HD, overpenetration would be very bad, and it's awkward to maneuver, even with the stock folded. If the balloon goes up, well, it's there, and then the question comes into play - can an outta shape overweight older guy actually USE it for EOTWAWKI?

Inside my home, I'm not even comfortable with the .223 round. That being said, my AK wears a red dot, laser, and Tapco M4 stock with Galil style handguards and a UTI grip.;)

I've set up several 16" AR's with 1-4x or 1.5-5x scopes which works well and is coyote accurate at 250 yards. Less accurate rifles like the AK or SKS get a low x scope or 2x red dot which compliments the effective range of the 7.62x39. These combinations will usually knock the crap out of a 5 gallon bucket out to or past 200 yards.

For all-around utility, I would say AR-15 with some sort of 1-4x-ish scope on it. Alternatively, you could go with an Aimpoint or EOtech with a magnifier. That would give you fast target acquisition. The magnified settings would make longer shots easier.

Your opinions on what you think is best all purpose rifle especially HD

I wouldn't choose any rifle for HD, unless you live alone in a brick house. They'll over-penetrate and are simply too much gun for the job. Get yourself a good pump shotgun and load it with #4 buck.

and SHTF day

The rifle I'd choose would be the PTR91. It's as reliable as the vaunted AK, but is more powerful, more accurate, shoots flatter and further and, with the right loads, will stop anything in the lower 48 except maybe grizzlies and bison. I myself bought an FAL, (different rifle, same caliber) and I love it to pieces, but, if I had it to do all over again, I'd go with the PTR.

and what kind of scope to put on it.

I don't know enough about this subject to comment, so I'll leave it to more knowledgeable posters than I.

My "All Purpose Rifle" is a Russian SKS with iron sights, it does what I ask it to do. As for HD, I much prefer a 12 gauge shotgun with #4, Benelli M3 or a Savage 350.

SHTF stuff........ well I have 2 Galils, one scoped and one iron sight. But hey, zombies move slow, I'd just let the barn cats deal with them:D.

wrong direction

Right away we went from "general purpose" to HD/SD/end of the world.

A far cry from "general purpose", no or few references to hunting, many .223/ 7.62x39 'intermediate ctg firing rifles. Little or nothing to take on medium to big (500 lb? critters)

My vote: a .308 bolt carbine, topped w/ some type of medium powered fixed magnification scope of good quality, a Leupold or similar, say a compact 4x at largest, maybe 2.75x.

The rifle should have BUIS of some type, and the scope should have QD rings and batteries not required. Stock will be synthetic, the tougher the better,no wood. A plain jane minimalist trigger, along the lines of the old M70 or Mauser 98, and the Ruger LC6 would be ok too. Blackened or anodized stainless steel would be nice also. No real hang ups re push feed v. controlled feed, but controlled would be an advantage. Mag cap not an issue, infact a blind mag would suit me, I couldn't loose anything.

With such a rifle I would walk anywhere in much of the world, short of Africa, w/ little need for another.

My all-around, HD, SD, and SHTF weapon is an 1896 Krag.

When everyone else is scrambling to get their....

....Wait, it's a SHTF thread......... :barf:

Freedom Watcher, this thread is very close to being a forum rules violation. Take a look at the rules in the FAQ section of the site.

No rifle is an ideal home defense weapon for ll the same reasons previously posted. A good pump 12GA with buckshot would take care of your home needs. Add to that a decent semi auto pistol of your favorite flavor and you're good to go. The CZ VZ58 is an excellent rifle that is about as rugged as they come. I would carry mine with plain jane iron sights and feel comfortable doing so. That with a high cap 9, or 40 on my hip and I'd be good to go outside. If in wide open spaces one of my .308 semi autos would make me feel a little better, but most of us would be caught in suburban/urban locations where ARs, AKs and VZ58 type weapons would make more sense. As for optics a good EOTech, or a wide field of view scope would be useful. I have an AR with the EOTech XPS2-0 and another with a 2x7x33 scope mounted to it. Either one would serve me well.

"General purpose" and home defense are pretty much mutually exclusive. And SHTF is so low on the probability list that we just don't bother with that at this website.

Home defense with a rifle? Pretty much any semi-auto, box magazine, medium-power cartridge will do as well as any other.
