wrong direction
Right away we went from "general purpose" to HD/SD/end of the world.
A far cry from "general purpose", no or few references to hunting, many .223/ 7.62x39 'intermediate ctg firing rifles. Little or nothing to take on medium to big (500 lb? critters)
My vote: a .308 bolt carbine, topped w/ some type of medium powered fixed magnification scope of good quality, a Leupold or similar, say a compact 4x at largest, maybe 2.75x.
The rifle should have BUIS of some type, and the scope should have QD rings and batteries not required. Stock will be synthetic, the tougher the better,no wood. A plain jane minimalist trigger, along the lines of the old M70 or Mauser 98, and the Ruger LC6 would be ok too. Blackened or anodized stainless steel would be nice also. No real hang ups re push feed v. controlled feed, but controlled would be an advantage. Mag cap not an issue, infact a blind mag would suit me, I couldn't loose anything.
With such a rifle I would walk anywhere in much of the world, short of Africa, w/ little need for another.
