I was wondering what breed y'all thought made the best all around gun dog?
I'm talking upland birds, rabbit, blood trail wounded game, water retrieve..etc.
Just curious. I have a 18 month old German Shorthair female who is coming along pretty well.
This is a pic of her yesterday on a rabbit trail. What is interesting is i never took her rabbit hunting before. My wife had the camera 'cause it was a nice snowy day. The rabbit broke cover 5 steps after this photo was taken. The look on the dogs face says it all. Kinda strange, huh?

In my opinion the Brittany spaniel is the ideal field dog. My hunting partner has two, Chance and Tweek, and they are both outstanding game-finders, trackers, and retrievers. Further, they mind well, are pretty and stylish, and of great heart. They simply don't know the meaning of the word "quit" when it comes to field work. Finally, they are fine house-dogs, too; good all-around companions.

What more could a hunter ask of a dog?

Good luck, and good shooting!

I acquired a Vizsla for this purpose, although they are mostly trained as bird dogs nowadays. Mine is still a puppy at four months, so I can't tell you how well my choice has panned out yet.

The Vizsla, like the Weimarainer, was bred as a "versatile" do-all hunting dog during the Middle Ages. They are great companions, as well.

I've got to go with a German Shorthair. I am an outfitter/guide and I've been around or owned lots of different breeds.

Enclosed are a few of my GSPs. The two young dogs are 14 months and the other is 4 years old. The puppies finished 1-2 in this year's "Chukar Classic" and Max finished third last year.
