ALERT: The Gonzales Gun Grab

As of today, July 14th, ATF/DOJ has banned all importation of barrels for
use in 'non-sporting firearms'. This "ruling" comes after two weeks of
specific denials by ATF officials that any such ban was going to occur.
This "ruling" is a backdoor attempt at reinstating the Assault Weapons
Ban of 1994, by de facto banning import of guns which (in effect) meet
the expired AWB definition. This ban is a direct attack on the home-builder
and antique collector community.

WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU:
* AK-47s will double in price. AK variants using unusual barrels will be available in very small quantities if at all.
* Semi-automatic versions of historic weapons such as the Maxim, Vickers, Bren, and MG-42 will disappear from new production.
* FALs will increase in price by at least $250.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
* Contact NRA-ILA, GOA, and JPFO IMMEDIATELY and politely demand that they take action.
* Once one or more groups begins a letter writing campaign, JOIN IT.

REMEMBER:
* ATF wants you to believe that this is merely an enforcement of existing law. Don't believe it. This is a backdoor AWB. We can turn this around.
* We hang together or hang seperately! Just because you don't own an AK or homebuild does not mean you can ignore this. If they will go after a harmless group like collectors, they will go after anyone. You ARE next.
* The Gunowning community needs multiple advocates. If you are only a member of one RKBA group, join more!
* GET ACTIVE and join letter writing campaigns!

I see you, too, are from pittsburgh. Whats around here that I can take part in?

Also: Am I to read this as I can no longer get the longer barrel for a P22 if I bought t with the short one?

I am going to write a script and call my represenatives tomorrow. If anyone else writes one before I do and posts it, all the better. Remember, those of us who live in little states (I live in ND) have lots of say in the Senate. (Call the House Members as well.) All my represenatives are Dems, this will probably be a test on where they really stand on gun control. All are kind of "middle of the road" IMHO. Anyone have a link to represenatives NRA gun ratings?

Old news; its been known they were going to do this for a week or two now. F6s have already been getting kicked out. I already stocked up on barrels and a couple parts kits. I think it was Dan Shea posted on subguns that the NFATCA or FAIR was already considering a lawsuit. FWIW, it doesn't look like Gonzales was involved here. I've heard from several importers that BATF was just tired of watching AK parts kits come into the country ostensibly for "repair or replacement" parts only when in fact they were being used to build new guns en masse. To some extent, the gun industry brought this on. BATFE is not stupid and they do know whats going on in the industry. Does no one remember the time when suppressor parts like wipes could be legally purchased and how widespread abuse of the law to make unregistered cans caused BATF to close the loophole through regulation?

No matter, I have faith that the invisible hand of the market will work to fill the void. Barrels, even chrome lined AK barrels, can be made here. The cost will certainly increase, but they will eventually be available from US sources.

Contact NRA, not your congresscritters. They won't know what you're talking about. NRA needs to know that this is important to its membership.

The law says barrels and recievers of unsporting guns cannot be imported. Some time back, the gov decided EBR were unsporting. When bush was first elected, parts kits with barrels were allowed in again as repair parts.

How can a federal agency make up its own laws like that. I thought that was congress's job.

As I understand it, they are acting within the law. 18 USC 925(d)(3) is the statute upon which this is based. 18 USC 925(d):

(d) The Attorney General shall authorize a firearm or ammunition to be imported or brought into the United States or any possession thereof if the firearm or ammunition—
(1) is being imported or brought in for scientific or research purposes, or is for use in connection with competition or training pursuant to chapter 401 of title 10;
(2) is an unserviceable firearm, other than a machinegun as defined in section 5845(b) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (not readily restorable to firing condition), imported or brought in as a curio or museum piece;
(3) is of a type that does not fall within the definition of a firearm as defined in section 5845(a) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and is generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes, excluding surplus military firearms, except in any case where the Attorney General has not authorized the importation of the firearm pursuant to this paragraph, it shall be unlawful to import any frame, receiver, or barrel of such firearm which would be prohibited if assembled

If I understand their position correctly, BATF believes this to empower them to deny form 6s for any barrel, frame, or receiver of a firearm which would be unimportable if assembled. This issue came up several years ago and they continued to allow barrels to come in with complete parts kits for "repair or replacement" of existing guns, basically giving the gun industry a pass on imported barrels if they were imported for "repair or replacement" purposes only, but that rule was being ignored and abused. Eventually they got tired of watching their rule ignored and decided to crack down and enforce the law as its written. As I understand it, lawsuits are going to be filed, but absent some action at the Congressional or executive level we're screwed until US manufacturers get up and running to pick up trhe slack.

Contact the NRA?

Puhhleeeese! This doesn't effect the hunting industry! I have called NRA-ILA and written, only the GOA members email do I see anything on this, my NRA-ILA member email kinda skips it....
