A lot of us here use AP articles. Maybe we should start adding "For educational use only" at the bottom. (see bottom of this post)

ASSOCIATED PRESS PROTECTS ITS CONTENT ONLINE
Cyveillance Surfs In Search of Unauthorized Content Use

The Associated Press (AP), with more than 6,800 television, radio, and newspaper members, wants to make sure its content is not being pirated on the Internet.

So the AP has hired Cyveillance, the Washington, D.C.-based e-business intelligence firm, to track down unauthorized online use of its content.

"Managing valuable proprietary content on the Internet is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to do by themselves due to the sheer volume of information on the Net and the rapid proliferation of sites," said Brandy Thomas, CEO and chairman of Cyveillance.

Cyveillance will provide its 'Extra-Site' e-business intelligence services to the AP by surfing the Web in search of unauthorized publishing of AP content. Cyveillance uses its proprietary NetSapien software to analyze the Internet's pages.

Newspaper Web sites also have been subject to other sites stealing their content. Often, their course of action entails a cease-and-desist letter, but such recourse can only be used once the stolen content has been tracked down.

However, http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/107.html says,
"17 USC 107 Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright [emphasis mine]. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include -

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

Better yet, just post the link to the article in question. That way there's NO problems involved.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

TFL quotes of news events is in the category of research/scholarship, no money changes hands, no profit is made. Further, we always cite the author and source. Thus AP gets their credit and authorship.

Continue as we have

OK, thanks. I always wondered if, at some point, TFL would get to be a thorn in the antis' side and they'd figure out some legalistic nit-picking way to suppress the spread of news.

I was a bit foggy on the legality of posting articles that had "nor to be copied, printed, etc.", which is why I always added the copyright as well as the URL.
