Alchemy Arms?

Anybody heard of these guys? I found an ad for them in SWAT Magazine. Alchemy Arms claims to make the "most technologically advanced pistols in the US", and have several grades of models in 9mm, .40, and .45.

They all seem to have internal keylocks, as well, but I am trying to figure out just what is so high tech about them.

Leading the way in handgun technology

The most advanced U.S. made handgun of the century, features a hammer-less, linear action, striker fired system and a non-pivoting 1911 trigger mechanism. Our industry experience and cad-cam systems allow us to use the latest technology in materials and manufacturing to provide the user the highest quality product available.

They make a pistol called the Spectre.

Striker fired like a Glock, but with a safety system ala a 1911, and made of, GET THIS, all metal...

sounds like a sweet weapon to me, and if the quality control is worth a crap, than this seems like a very sweet weapon...

I'm waiting to see one in a display case somewhere, so I can look it over and see what fit and finish are like on them...

I saw a review of this pistol, possibly a prototype, in a '99 circa gun rag. If I recall, it featured a slim handle that made it seem like an ideal full-size handgun for CCW.

Then again, how much more slim can you get than your typical 1911? I suppose the only way to confirm this is to handle one oneself.

Being located in Seattle, I was hoping to see one in person but have yet to. Their Web site is okay - would love to see closeup pics of the gun, safeties, etc., but all you get are thumbnail-sized photos.

There was one on Gunbroker, and I think the starting bid was around 650.

I've only seen these at SHOT show.

The idea is solid. Glock type slide. 1911 (kinda) safety. Slim grip. Decent trigger.

The alloy frame felt kind of different. Not bad. But very different. No grip panels. Just checkered aluminum.

However the prototypes were rough. Very rough. Sharp edges all over the ejection port. No idea how they function. That is a big question mark.

So it just kind of depends. If the company gets its act together, and the actual production guns live up to the design's potential then they could be great.

Great idea about visiting, but I just discovered they're not actually in Seattle but a ferry ride away in Port Orchard. So a side trip during an errand is unlikely. Bummer...

I saw one for the first time at a gun show a few weeks ago and the pistol looked GREAT! It was a blue .45 and the quality looked fantastic and the trigger felt great.. They were asking about $400 for it if my memory serves me right.. I was VERY impressed. So much so that I did some research on em and found em still too new to get decent feedback on em. I *love* the silver/aluminum .45 service spectre.. I may wait a lil and if the feedback is positive Ill grab one..

I know the designer of the gun. I've seen the prototypes and read an awful lot about them but I have not fired any of them or even held them.

As has been said the philosophy behind it was to combine the best of two worlds: 1911 and Glock. There were some troubles with the prototypes but it appears that the design has been modified to prevent the same problems in the future.

From those who have fired them there's a mixed bag of opinions but it all centers around the common understanding that it's a finely designed and well-built gun.

Would love to get my hands on one.

Ignatius,
Since you know the designer, maybe you could call him up and find out for us about things like availability, cost, etc. I'm sure he'd love to keep potential customers informed!
Thanks!

I called them several months ago and the salesman mentioned they had made some changes to the pistol and it was out for review, with a new production run this year. I requested a brochure but never received it...

The website definitely needs to be updated with more/bigger pics. Just requested another brochure from here: http://www.alchemyltd.com/contact.cfm?DID=0&KEY=0&STM=2002-04-09 16:46:17
Maybe if we all request one then SOMEONE will get lucky and get some kind of response. :D
