Ala Dan was right

About the beginning of the year, I was looking to get another .357 revolver and chose a Taurus Tracker, mostly due to the ported barrel and the price. At that time Ala Dan advised me to buy a different revolver, he suggested a Smith, but mostly just NOT Taurus. Well, I liked the Tracker's looks and like I said "Wow, ported"!!! So, I got it. Well, it's been a good pistol, but the porting caused more muzzle flash and roar than I anticipated, plus, when I got interested in IDPA, I found it couldn't be used there. So I just got a S & W model 66-6, with a 4" barrel. Man, nice gun! Fits my hand better than the Taurus, it's IDPA legal and when I took it to the range for it's christening tonight, it was nicer to shoot than the Tracker, even with magnum loads! I won't embarass myself with any pics of targets, cause I am NOT Mr. Camp;) , but I will post a pic of my Smith. I've got some Miculek grips on the way too, they should top things off nicely!
PS it has a nice DA trigger too, not perfect, but I'm sure it'll get there.
Thanks, Dan:cool:

Now, That Is A Very fine Looking Weapon Indeed

Again many thank's Prodigalshooter for the kind word's!:)
I originally reply'ed to your post under the "Ruger Security-
Six-A Classic" thread.

I must mention here that my friend, The Fesser has a .45
caliber Taurus Tracker that he is quite pleased with. He is
to do deer hunting on Monday with it; so we anixously
await his post!

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

Don't think Dans pointed many people wrong, though I still like my 4506 better than the Sig 220 for a range gun. No accounting for taste huh;)

Ahrends grips on my carry 3" 65 ended my search for the perfect grip. Sounds like a good combo.

Greeting's Folk's,

Just had a real wild idea! WOW!:D Maybe one
of these day's we could all meet at a central location
and have a one day shoot off!:) :D Criteria: any
caliber handgun, .38 Special and above, barrel length
not less than 4" ; and not greater than 6". NO OPTICAL SIGHTING EQUIPMENT ALLOWED, PERIOD!

*FWIW- For those that don't already know, our friend
Mr. Stephen A. Camp is darn good. I've had the extreme pleasure of competeing against him in some postal
pistol match'es. And guess what? He won nearly every
time! It will take a strong showing by all to defeat our
friend. He shoot's revolver's and semi auto chuncker's
equally; as he is an out-standing handgun shot. You
might say, he's just about as popular as the late, great
Mr. Elmer Keith!

Hope to meet and great all of you soon!

Dang Dan... I'd have to sort through 1420 post to make sure I never made any exact claims as to group sizes I'm capable of :o

Ahhh I could show up with my left hand bandaged and claim I was shooting weak handed;)

I think this one "might" look a bit better...
Prodigalshooter:

That photo looks a lot better.

When I zoom it up, it looks sharper than the normal size looks.

Anyway, about your gun.........You have a fine revolver.

The M66 is my most accurate centerfire handgun.

Try shooting some 158 grain, .38 Special, semi-wadcutters.

This is a very accurate load in mine

Mark IV, I did try some of those, they were pleasant to shoot; also some round nose in the same weight, ditto.
A fellow IDPA shooter who only shoots revolver told me that the Winchester 142 (?) gr. .38's are nice to shoot as well, I havn't tried those yet. She also shoots SASS and said the Winchester is close to her cowboy loads in the same caliber, in other words, soft shooting, just enough velocity to punch the paper;)
Sounds good to me, as I don't wanna shoot IDPA with 110 gr. .357 magnum !!

Back when I used to have my Security Six (early '80s), I used to take HBWCs and varmint hunt for ground squirrels etc. Took some really nice shots on the little critters at 25-30 yards (with a rest), so I know the wadcutter family is very accurate. I used to handload .357 cases with the Lee handload kit then, that was really handloading! Time consuming too!!

Wish I read that before I bought a taurus tracker 4" in .41 mag.
10 pound trigger (Or more) aside, that gun couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if I was standing on top of it.
I sold it at a $150 loss, and still kinda miss it, but if I was to do it again, I'd look for an older model 58.
I don't like the way the M58 looks, and I wish that S&W made the 657 in 4", I already have the 8" version.
OMG the taurus tracker, and my 4" Dan Wesson 715 were twins except for the caliber difference. (And accuracy potential.)

Caz223 - know what you mean, I have a 657 Smith with a 6" barrel - it is a fine (and accurate handgun); but what I really, really want is a 4" version. I am looking at each shop and gun show I attend for a S&W Model 57 with a 4" barrel. I came close to buying a really nice 6" M57-1 a couple of weeks ago in Charlotte, figured I could send it to S&W and have the barrel changed. But then I decided maybe I would be better off to just wait for an original 4" to come around. That .41 Rem mag is a fine round. NG Bruce
