Al Gore's Son Headed To Traffic Court
Arrested for Speeding and Reckless Driving
Aug. 21, 2000

CURRITUCK, N.C. (AP) -- Al Gore's son has a court date in North Carolina to face charges of speeding and reckless driving.

Albert Gore III, 17, was arrested and charged Aug. 12 with driving 97 mph in a 55 mph zone and reckless driving, said 1st Sgt. A.C. Joyner of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

He was driving on a state highway in a rural, sparsely populated area along the Outer Banks just south of Norfolk, Va., authorities said.

Alone in car

Camille Johnston, a spokeswoman for Tipper Gore, said Saturday that the teen-ager was alone at the time and was heading home to Washington after a family vacation.

The Gore family vacationed on Figure Eight Island farther south along the North Carolina coast near Wilmington in early August.

"The Gores are dealing with this as a family matter," Johnston said.

Sept. 13 court hearing

A court hearing was for scheduled Sept. 13. Possible punishment for the charges would be a fine and loss of driving privileges in North Carolina as determined by the judge.

Joyner said Gore was cooperative during the arrest.

How did he get away from his Secret Service escort? I can't imagine he's running around ungaurded. Can you say "jail break?"

I bet there's a bit more to this story. Maybe he's getting a little tired of playing "the game" or he's been asked to do some things he isn't too happy about. You gotta admit, it must be pretty weird being the child of a high-level politico. Pure speculation on my part.

Never mind the fact that Al Gore III was endangering the lives of others with his reckless operation of what was, in effect, a deadly weapon. The real scandal is that he was using a <gasp> internal combustion engine!

Good point cuerno. Why was he placed under arrest simply for speeding and reckless driving?

In NC, if I'm correct, 80 is reckless and arrestable. NC state troppers are hardcore about stuff on 168.

I'm in SE VA and visit the OBX fairly often. 168 is a great road, but the troopers aren't exactly forgiving, esp. if your plates say something besides "First in Flight".

I believe in most states you can loose your license and be hauled in for driving 30mph+ over the speed limit... at least, thats the impression that I had. Seeing that he was doing nearly double the speed limit, it was probably right for them to haul him in no matter who he is.. I'll be waiting anxiously to see what happens.. if anything else is even mentioned. I'm waiting for daddy to step in and have a few words with somebody. I think it would be awesome if NC said "We don't give a damn who you or your son is.. he broke the law."

That would rock.

(Wishful thinking, I know. )

"The Gores are dealing with this as a family matter." I think it is clearly a public matter if the kid is arrested. Wonder why the national media did not pick this story up??? Good thing is was not one of G. W.'s kids doing this.

I used to arrest people for reckless driving all the time, "Operating a motor vehicle with the reckless disregard of the lives and safety of others." More than 15 MPH over the posted speed limit or three or more different moving violations during the same incident were things I looked for.

I just wonder how he escaped his SS guards to begin with, maybe that is why he was driving 97 in a 55 zone. I am willing to bet that external forces are being brought to bear on the N.C. State police to resolve this before 3 goes to trial or Jr faces election.

I dont know about North Carolina, but it is in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, if you are cited at such a high rate of speed over the limit.

OTOH, the local vast right wing radio station I listen to, said young master Gore, did NOT have to submit to any alcohol/drug tests , which ARE mandatory in most states after such a high speed, reckless driving arrests, including here in the PRK.

It sure must be nice to be the son of a "King" , eh ?

It took him several dives to get Mary Jo's clothes back on.

When would be a good time for Vice President AlGore Jr to offer NC a big pile of fed money to solve the dirty water problem caused by Hurricane Floyd flooding all the hog farms?
Ralph Nader won't be the only green candidate after all.

What was the worse thing about JFK Jr.'s plane crash?

He didn't have Uncle Teddy with him :D

I find it strange that the Secret Service (SS) wasn't with Gore's kid when he was pulled over. The President's family is protected by the SS around the clock. Doesn't the Vice President's family have the same protection from the SS? Now, this story comes out about the Trooper who is so impressed with Gore's kid and Tipper that he may now vote for Gore. I think it's nothing but a damn political publicity stunt to get votes for Gore.
