AKU Bullpup kit on an SAR-1

Looking at getting an SAR-1.
I am also looking at getting this "AKU" bullpup kit I saw. 200 bucks for this kit... Plastic grips and furniture... Parts feel solid and well made. But does anyone have one of these and know if its a good kit? I hate chinsy crappy shoddy stuff... like the CHOAT BP kits for Mini-14s and 10-22s. Still wish I picked up that one BP AK a few years ago for only 600. Its was all steel and very high quality. Dang it dang it dang it.

On the old AK forums...

Once you got past the flame wars, specific mention was mentioned about the wire trigger rod, and how it felt springy and spongy. Evidently, it pushes on the original trigger, kinda like pushing on a string to effect a change on the far end.

I thought about the same thing, with my Bulgarian SLR-95. I passed, and just got the K-VAR black synthetic furniture kit and "10 of 20" parts kit.

Well - of that the only problem...
It should not be too much of a problem to makea stiffer rod.

(That sounded almost vulgar...)

I have the bullpup kit on a Chinese AKS. The kit is made to work with the stamped receivers since that trigger connecting 'wire' runs through the gap under the trunion. The wire is too flexible and I had to do some filing on the hammer to get the trigger reset to work. I also cut off the sights, the front has to be raised to the moon to get it to work right. I bought the scope mount that mounts on the rear sight block and use a Bushnell 1.75-5x variable. Works great. I saw one of the bullpup kits fitted to a VEPR in .308 at a Louisville, Ky gun show. Didn't get to shoot it, but it looked neat. On my milled Bulgarian SLR-95 I used the standard KVAR black furniture set and converted the internals over so the rifle qualifies as an American made gun.

Again - The operating rods being weak to the point of being springy are only problematic. This can be remedied if one is clever.
I am amazingly clever.
My concern is the feel of the overall kit once its installed on the weapon.

George, I like the feel of the kit. It does not seem to be a cheap add on and at $200 it isn't cheap. Not at all like putting a Choate folder on an 870 shotgun.

You have to respect a man who is "amazingly clever" and knows it

PS I think those AK bullpups are very handy looking so if you get one let us know how it works out.

Thanks George - now there's yet one more gun/gadget I've got to have that I wouldn't have realize existed if not for The Firing Line!:) I've always thought the Bullpup rifles seemed to make a lot of sense (very compact, but with long-barrel performance). I have a couple of SAR-1s. I put a plastic Bulgarian-style stock on one (which I like a lot), and I had planned to leave the other with the original wood - maybe refinish it someday. But, now I'm thinking that maybe it needs one of these bullpup setups. If you get one, please let us know how it turns out.

Reasons I want a Bullpupped AK:

1. Hellacool.
2. I've always wanted a really good BP rifle... the Mini-14 kits need not apply.
3. I like the AK series.
4. The AK series almost always has too short of a stock.
5. Magazines are a plenty.
6. I can't have a Krinkov.
7. It is TOTALLY UN-PC.
8. I really don't like folding stocks, yet the shorter the gun - the easier it is to get it in and out of the vehicles and safes.
9. I'll be the first on my block to have one.

drum roll...

10. In 7.62X39MM, I could even hunt with it.
