AK47 Brands

I was looking into maybe getting an ak47 style rifle to try out and see how one shoots. I have no experience at all with these type rifles. Who makes the best ak47 style rifles around and what do they run for?

Probably the best new ones are the Krebs Gun Works conversions of Russian Saigas for around $800 (guess). Otherwise, the Bulgarian milled receivers are pretty nice.

I'd stay away from any of the US made receivers.

you might check out http://www.ak-47.net/ for very specific information.

the sar1 is a good place to start, but for the same price and more fun go with the sar2 (5.45x39mm) pay less for mags, <$6 each, bit more for ammo <$100/1k and get a lighter recoiling and more accurate gun.

the best ak in 7.62x39mm is the kerbs because it is a blue printed gun by a reputable smith.

the best "ak style" rifle is the south african R4 in 5.56x45mm (the ploymer buttstock is much nicer than the original steel) if you have to ask what it would cost to obtain one, you can't afford it.

Bulgarian SLR series - awesome rifles. Check out what people have to say about theirs before committing to a purchase.

The BEST fot and finish on an AK I've ever seen was the FEG SA-85 M 7.62x39 rifle pre ban versions were imported by kassner (sp?) the blonde wood was really pretty and the bluing is deep and not 'military" looking at all. The bolt carrier was blued as well and the barrel was a bit longer than a standard ak and heavier. Wish i had bought one.

The chinese guns are well made but finish is thin and patchy on some. Politics aside, its decent weapon. I bought a 223 mak 90 a number of years ago and while its no tack driver it can certainly get 4 inch 100 yard groups.. even with those cruddy chinese sights. Be careful if you want to buy a 223 ak.. magazines are more expensive and spares (if you need them) are not as plentiful. Also the norinco 84s (pre ban) and the mak90 use a spring loaded firing pin that is weak.. your gun will occasionally double or even triple if this is not replaced.

The folks over at ak74.net are really helpful but opinionated about thier makes.

Reliablity hasn't been an issue in any AK ive ever seen, its a solidly designed rifle.

Note that "saiga rifles" are built on ak74 specs, not ak47, regardless of caliber.

I am a proud owner of a SLR-95, Bulgarian milled AK. This rifle shoots great and is well made. Probably one of the best imported AK's you can get. I just recently got a Rob Arms VEPR II in .223 and let me say, this is one fine AK. It's accuracy is awesome and the fit/finish is second to none. It is made off of a real Russian RPK rcvr and bull barrel. I am extremely happy with the VEPR. I thought I wouldn't like it as much as my SLR, but I do...I highly recommend the VEPR and if you can find a good SLR-95 running around, that too is a great AK

I suggested the SAR series because they offer the most bang for the buck. If you want a high quality AK with the look of Viet-Nam era war trophy, check out the SLR-100H built by Gordon Technologies.

Here is a photo of mine:

It is built on a milled Bulgarian receiver with hand selected Hungarian surplus parts and Russian furniture.

Rex,

That is the best looking "traditional" AK-variant I have seen. As I have related on other posts, I looked several times at the SAR, but thought they felt and looked like junk. I have a VEPR II on the way, should get to me by next week. The more reviews I see for it, the greater my anticipation to shoot it.

Thanks for the kind words about my SLR, rock_jock.

I just picked up a SAR-2 to experiment with the 5.45x39. SARs look a little rough, but they are dependable. If you replace the skinny US made pistol grip that comes from the factory with with a thicker (still US made!) pistol grip, and get some Bulgarian synthetic furniture, the rifle feels much better in the hands. And it looks better than a $229 AK has a right to!
