Ivebhad a couple AKs and have a 74 now, buying another 47 and kinda want an underfolder for compactness for a canoe/boat gun. I like to plink while fishing. It distracts me from the fact Im not catching anything lol.

Are they brutal on the cheek when fireing? The steel bar looks uncomftrable even for a mikd round like the 7.62x39.

Are they that tougher to shoot with the weird off to the side cheek weld? I have handled a couple but not very much, just curious.

They aren't brutal but they are uncomfortable. You are offset to the side and have to pretty much put your cheek directly against it to get a good sight picture. The other thing I don't like about them is no matter how tight they are new they always develop wiggle in the stock where it locks at the receiver. After shooting fixed stock and polymer sidefolders I got rid of my underfolder. It does noticeably suck compared side by side.
I would get a nice triangle or polymer sidefolder and stay away from underfolders or the wire sidefolders.

Paracord yourself a cheek weld

I've got an underfolder and bought it for the very reason you're talking, compactness, only I bought mine for a truck gun.
They aren't that bad. Just take some paracord and wrap the left side of the stock and you get yourself a little cushion. Here's a picture of mine.

My Yugo M70AB2 is more comfortable to shoot than my WASR (most likely due to trigger slap). That said, it isn't something you'd want to run a carbine course with...

Trigger slap on your wasr? Really? I never had an issue with trigger slap. I been toying with the idea of replacing my factory wood with a adjustable and quad rail hand guard but I cannot let myself get rid of the wood

Yup. I could just stick a G2 trigger in there for $30 (which I will one of these days..). I have wicked trigger slap in my WASR... It's very accurate (2-4 MOA) for an AK so I don't really complain...

I have a Yugo Underfolder and a Lancaster/Polish full stock model. I actually find the Yugo more accurate and comfortable to shoot. I also did the paracord wrap.

I have a wasr2 ak74 that I got stupid crazy lucky with, with gold bear I get.a hair over 2 moa with the irons when I do my part correctly.

I feel dumb not haveing thought about the 550 cord before. As a Marine I can fix almost anything.with 90 mph tape 550 cord and a gerber multi tool, that should have been a no.braijer first thought lol.

My gf thinks Ive lost my mind about the whole canoe deal. In my defense I fish a lot of shallower slower flowing river areas, few ramps around them, never have to pay taxes or registration on it, never have to buy fuel for it, no concern about my car towing it, and its good upper body excersise. I christend it PV Beaver Pelt, a nick name / call sign I was.given in the Corps.

Thanks for the feedback guys

And luckly moccsins are pretty rare around here, Ive seen a few over the years, but only saw the whole nest rolling ball of them once after a little flood, very glad I was on the bank for that lol. I do see a lot of turtles, some big snap your finger off sob's sometimes. Caught a monster on a limb line last year one of my fishing buddies usualy carries arevolver with a .22 mag cylender. we looked like a scene that got edited out of swamp people that day lol

underfolders dont really hurt my face but I they always seem to kick like a mule compared to other stock designs. I have a side folder on my WASR and it's pretty compact.

I have the Romanian side folder, and mine has yet to bite me. It's a little tough for having no cheek weld, but it's not prohibitive at all.
