AK sight adjustment

How do you adjust the front sight of the AK? My Maadi's front sight needs work; I know I'm not THAT inaccurate. It was shooting low at point blank range.

Two devices in common use for the purpose-

One is a simple key, with plastic handle and a little metal fitting at the end that fits on the front sight post itself, and handles elevation only.

Second is a little more complicated and costs several dollars more. It is a sight pusher for windage adjustments and it also will handle the screw-in-and-out, elevation adjustments.

Both tools also work for the SKS and Chinese type 56.

I got mine from Cheaper Than Dirt in Fort Worth. They have a web site--I think
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
but, if that doesn't work, it is an easy search.

Best,
Johnny

A cheap-o method for adjusting windage is to put an empty cartridge case over the projection on one side of the site (the side towards which you want to drift the site) and use a plain old C-clamp to drift it.

The best way to adjust windage is with the special tool mentioned in other posts here. It looks like a small "C" clamp. About $9 at guns shows. It's the same one used for the SKS.

For elevation, the front post screws up and down, just like the front post on the AR-15. The AK should come with a little tool kit. The kit fits into a metal capsule that fits into the spring loaded trap door in the end of the butt stock. In the tool kit is a flat metal blade about 2" long, that looks like a screw driver blade with no handle. The end opposite the screw driver blade has a small hole that fits down over the front sight post. Use that to turn the post to move it up and down. For leverage on that tool, use the cleaning jag from the tool kit that screws onto the cleaning rod. Put the screw driver blade on the front sight post, and then put the hole of the cleaning jag over the blade at a right angle, and use it to turn the blade.

The manual that you get with a modern AK is virtually worthless. Search the AK forums for the web site where you can download the US Army manual for the AK. I don't have it handy, but will see if I can find the site and post it later.

buttstock...

There supposedly is something in a compartment in the buttstock. Problem is, I can't get the damned buttplate off. The screws were put in there by someone very determined, lemme tell you.

I managed to sort-of recenter the front sight post with a screwdriver. Not the best solution, but we're going shooting this afternoon, so I should get to test it then.

Nightcrawler, if there is something in the buttstock, you should be able to find a dime-sized "portal" in the stock. Stick your finger in there. You should feel a tube. SLowly withdraw your finger, holding the portal open, and a tube should come out under pressure of a spring. There's your cleaning kit. Don't think it comes with a sight adjustment tool, though.

Many AK's have lost their cleaning kits, though, so you may not have it.

There's nothing in there; no compartment in the buttstock, actually. The manual is very poorly translated from...Arabic? It was made in Egypt. Anyway, I'm going shooting again tonight.

I hope my crude sight adjustments will give me halfway decent accuracy, at least.

If you got your rifle to shoot to point of aim at very close distances, you will find it will shoot hopelessly high any further out. Look at the front site tower and see how much the bullet would have to rise in that distance, what is it? 2 inches? I cannot remeber off hand what the battle zero for the 7.62x39 is, but by neccesity it will shoot low very close, converge on the point of aim as you approach the near zero distance, climb over it as you continue to back up , peak, and fall back down to POA at the far zero distance. This is normal. Every round in every gun will shoot low if you are close

One of the famous Maadi (and other designs also)traits is the canted front sight. Sometimes there just isn't enough adjustment in the front and rear sights combined to zero the gun. The overall quick fix is to buy an RPK adjustable rear sight for about $20. Available at K-VAR and Tapco.

P.S. Get the B-Square front sight adjustment tool. Won't break on you.
