Ak Recommendation

Okay, there is a big show coming up here this next weekend and I am thinking about adding another AK to my collection. I would like to keep the price around $500, and I am looking for reccomendations for a good postban AK with a 922r-legal pistol grip. What's the best you can get for that kind of money? BTW, 7.62x39 only, I already have enough calibers to stock up on without adding 5.45x39 to the list.

Bulgarian Milled

ie, the SLR-95, or newer variants. Now there's a pistol grip variant with the same milled receiver configuration, as well as the hammer forged barrel and AK-74 type gas port/tube. The only thing is, I don't know if they are still available for that $500. I bought mine for $219.95 back when Feinstein was sending out postcards to Californians warning about the dangers of the AK rifle. With good domestic ammo, or my handloads, I've broken into 2" at 100 yards, which is phenomenal for the AK pattern rifle. Wish I'd bought more than one in hindsight...

Whatever you buy, try to stick with AK completely
made/assembled in one country - Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, China, etc. I heard Krebs AKs (USA) are pretty good, but I also heard a lot of complaints about AKs modified with US made trigger groups, US receivers, etc. I've actually seen this AK trigger group made in the U.S., and I couldn't believe what a piece of crap it was, looked like it was produced in a bakery.

I am really suprised no one mentioned the SAR-1 Romanian... http://www.aimsurplus.com has em. For The Money @300 give or take they are the best! Respectable groups at 100 meters ( 2-4 inches depends on rifle, some get about one inch but dont count on that...mine will do about 2.5). Mags are also a bargin at this site! Every body I know and have heard of is happy with theirs... I visited that costoum site...nice, but it is essentialy a stamped AK...with repotedly better assembly and better fire control unit. ( Mine is fine so far and if I have to I could replace it my self on the cheap...) Happy shooting!

OOPS! Aim does not list the SAR-1 any more...they do have a WASR Romanian in 7.62 x 39 with a Laminate "Drugunov" style stock and two 30 round mags.(YES these pupies take standard mags..not the neutered ones). The price was 250, O.K. no pistol grip, the question is why? Are these fully factory assembled? If so that may be better than many "coustom" rifles...are the frie controls factory? I would not hesisitate to give the good folks at AIM a call ( See web site)and find out all the details...

For the price, the Romanian SAR 1 is a great deal. Paid $350 for mine. Took awhile to get all the cosmoline off of it. It is still ugly but after six months, I have learned to appreciate it more and more. At first the small stock took some getting used to. Like most AK's and variants their simplicity is amazing. They are rugged and fun to shoot. Nothing like loading a 30 round mag and cutting loose. Good therapy after a hard day's work. I am looking to getting another SAR.

Well the Krebs is hard to beat but you won't get one for $500 though. I'd go for one of the Arsenal USA AKs built up with Polish or Hungarian parts.

Re: WASR

The price was 250, O.K. no pistol grip, the question is why? Are these fully factory assembled?

CIA (or someone) imported a buttload of single stack rifles with the skeleton stock, and milled out the mag well to accept double stack mags. Some parts have been replaced - I would suspect trigger parts and floorplate/follower.

I do not believe that this rifle qualifies as 'the best AK type rifle for $500' in comparison to others listed.

Yah so its a beter deal...sue me! Really why spend 250 extra on a conversion you can do yourself. Besides nobody came up with a rifle that costs around 500.

As for the MAK-90...stay away from it! Most are not too accurate.

"You know, there is a site devoted to the AK47, http://www.ak47.net . They have a lot of good info on AKs and even a board with forums for just about every variation of the AK."

I asked the question there as well...I like to get a lot of opinions.
