AK question

I've searched this site as well as ak-47.net, gathering info. I'm considering a low end AK variant (around $200-$300). The SAR in 7.62x39 seems to be the most affordable. In my searching, I've seen the issue of "soft" US made parts raised a couple of times. Also an issue is the ability of any rifle I buy to accept 30 rd. mags. Comments on the SAR, or any other ak type rifle that is in this price range are welcome. Thanks

I had the pleasure to shoot a Norinco MAK-90 recently. This one had the American parts kit installed that included the trigger and hammer mechanisms, pistol grip and buttstock. We were able to shoot 6" groups at 50 yds. all day, and I mean ALL DAY! We shot over 3,000 rounds of various makes of ammo (russian, S&B, winchester) and used 30-round milsurp mags. We only had one FTF, and that was caused by a misshapen cartridge. For $300 (before the American kit), this little rifle is a real deal and great fun to shoot. I think you can still find them, except here in CA and other choice states. My friend tells me that it was just as reliable without the upgrades, except the thumbhole stock was uglier than Janet Reno.

The Romanian SAR-1 is a good rifle at a good price. I have two. Friends of mine have several more. They all work fine. I wouldn't worry about the "soft" U.S. parts. I haven't had a problem yet, and if I do, I don't think it will be tough or expensive to replace a few parts. If you do a search on "SAR" I'll bet you come up with lots of info (including more detailed comments I've posted before).

I recently purchased a SAR - 1 in 7.62 x39.

I have put at leats 600 round through it - so far it doesn't look like the hammer is deforming too much. Trigger pull seems to be staying consistant. Feeds Chinease steel core and Wolf HP ammo without a single bobble.

I think the SAR is the best value of the market right in AK-47. The stock is pretty ugly but can be upgarded with KVARs US made Polymer for that black rifle look.
