AK quality

Hi,
first excuse my bad english. I´m from germany and bought a "civilized" AK last week (Thumbhole stock ...). It came with a 5rd magazine (shortened 30rd magazine). When I shake my new AK
there are no loose parts, but when I attach a original 30rd magazine to it and shake it again, the magazine is swinging a little bit and I´m wondering if that is normal and it will affect the function of the rifle. Is my 30rd magazine broken or is this normal with AK´s? (I´m new to AK´s). A friend told me that this is quite normal cause that is the principe of the AK ... (but if I attach my 5rd magazine there are no noises like with the 30rd ...)

I would be very happy to hear from you, if you may have experienced the same "problems".

Thank you in advance!

Felix

Don't worry

It is actually fairly common for the 30-rounders to rattle around a little bit in an AK. The reason the 5-rounder doesn't rattle is probably because it is so short and light that it won't rattle on its own. I have an AK where the mags rattle a little and I have NEVER had a feeding failure yet in the 5 years that I've owned it.

Ah, "rattle" thats the word I was looking for :)
hehe
Thanks!
Yeah, my 5rd magazin is very very short and it doesn´t rattle.

does the ak have little dimples indented on the sides of the reciever about 1/4" deep and an inch long at about the same place the magazines go into the rifle, if not it was originally made as a single stack gun and that is why it rattles. you can either mock up something to put into the reciever to keep it from rattling or just ignore it, ak's arn't known for their tightness anyways and i doubt it will effect functioning either way.

How did you get an AK in Germany? I thought military semi-automatic rifles were illegal there, especially those with 30 round magazines.

The rattling of the 30-round mags was my first concern on my SSR-85b, reportedly supposed to be one of the finer AKs.

I was told by some of the experts that the rattle was necessary in AKs because of the flood of different manufacturer's magazines. There are so many different countries and companies that make AK mags, that some are going to be a little out-of-spec.

That "out-of-spec" of the many different mags was designed into the weapon so you can pick up any ol' mag lying around on the battlefield and be rest-assured that it will fit into your weapon.

Very smart thinking, on the designer's side.

where in germany are you located? I always like hearing from individuals from that part of the world. How did you aquire a high cap AK-47 in Deustchland?

Danke,

Reinhard

If the rattle bothers you(like it did me) you can place the receiver in a padded vice and squeeze it down a little. Be careful and only turn the vice about 1/16 of a turn then check the fit with a mag before continuing. Good Luck!

I´m located in the area of cologne. Getting an AK is not that hard in germany, it just has to be "civil" like a sporter version with a thumbhole stock, etc. Parts like 30rd Magazines, original stocks, etc. are all allowed to buy and own but you are not allowed to attach the original stock for example. I just bought some 30rd magazines for fun shooting. They´re cheap and you get them everywhere.
