AK Pistol Grip Conversions

Anybody have any thoughts one way or the other on having the conversion done to a thumbhole stock AK ie. MAK90 to pistol grip configuration via replacement of required parts with American made parts? Been looking at Soupbowl to do the work. Anyone have any dealings with them?

I have never heard of Soupbowl, but do have an opinion...

I do not like the thumbhole stocks and would go ahead with the conversion. IMO I would get a manual that outlines how to detail strip the AK, buy the US parts kit from a company such as KVAR and do the conversion yourself. You'd save money and really learn about the functioning of the rifle...

Good luck!

A detail stripping is all that's needed to replace the requisite parts for the P-grip conversion. I'd do all the work myself.

I thought Soupbowl was getting out of the business or was having some other troubles.

Stay away from Soupbowl unless your welling to wait 6 months after he tells you it well only take 2 weeks from the time he receives your funds.Check over at AK47 net for references(its down right now or I'd give you the link.)The buttstock looks like it was made from a 2x6.

Check out http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/ if you want a quality, authentic looking set of furniture. They are 95%complete and come in maple or walnut for around $65.

If you like synthetic stocks check out KVAR.

Thanks guys, this is what I was looking for and looks like you saved me alot of frustration. Anybody able to recommend the highest quality metal Us parts supplier for AK and FAL's?

I have an SLR-95 AKM with the dreaded thumbhole stock. The stock isnt TOO bad, but I prefer just a pistol grip as well. What I going to do about this is different though. I will be buying the AKU-94 kit from KVAR. This turns the AK rifle into a much shorter and compact "bullpup" style rifle. I have talked with a few different people who have purchased this kit and they were very happy with the results. The kit makes the installation of optics much easier with the AK platform also. Check it out, you might be interested in it.

I'm VERY interested in the AKU-94 conversion... let us know how it goes installation and function-wise.

The Gordon Tech trigger group is rumored on the other boards to be the best out there now. http://www.tennesseeguns.com/parts.html I have two sets on order now that I am anxiously awaiting for my MAK90 & SLR95. I was also going to go with the Ironwood stock set that someone already posted the link. They are supposed to be high-quality, but will require some final fitting/finishing. I had some free time over the weekend and built my own pistol grip and stock. I agree with the others that you should learn to do the work yourself. I didn't know how to do it either with my other rifles, but it is pretty easy once you start tinkering with it. Good luck. :)
