seen a couple of AKs firing the .223. however, never seen mags advertised for the same. Are the mags the same just a different calibre/

.223 AKs use mags propriatary to the cartridge. They look very similar to standard AK mags but they are different. .223 AK mags have always been harder to find and more expensive. I don't know about current availability. I know some people were experimenting with AK74 mags but I'm not sure what kind of success they had. Check over at www.ak-47.net or at www.assaultweb.net for better info.

The Norinco and the Polytech .223 AKS take different magazines with the Norincos being much easier to find and cheaper too. Though with some grinding and filing the Norincos can be converted to work in the Polytechs.

Still not as cheap or as easy to find as 7.62x39 magazines though.

The new SAR-3 rifles take converted AK-74 magazines.

Users have reported 100% reliability with 28 rounds loaded.

There are also steel magazines made specifically for the .223 AK's. These are called "Weiger" mags, and are available from Inter Ordnance. I do not know if these metal mags will work with older norinco and polytech AKs.

I believe that progressive Arms or K-var have .223 waffle mags available, but have not checked on this.

And once all this is said and done, yes, 7.62x39 AK mags are easy to find.

BUT, the 5.45x39 mags are as readily available, and cheaper!
