AK ejection issue

My dad's Bulgarian AK74 is having a pretty major problem. It's a new gun to us, but is obviously quite used. We've tried boxed Tulammo and surplus coated case ammo. Also tried two different mags, a new Promag and an old surplus one.

The rounds extract just fine, but it seems as though they eject upward most of the time, instead of out to the right. So what happens is the case rattles around in the dust cover and prevents the bolt from closing. Sometimes it jams way back, sometimes right up against the next chambered round.

Just now I went out and took the dust cover off and fired off a mag's worth. Functions beautifully without the cover, but about half the cases shoot up and over my back.

So what can be done about this problem? I don't know much about AKs, so any help would be appreciated.

just a guess also but if the ejector looks ok would probably check the bolt extractor for wear or extractor spring.
