AK Ammo (7.62x39) Wolf or PMP?

Now that I have a Romanian SAR-1 (with some Hungarian 30-round magazines; the Bulgarian Waffle mags are on their way), it's time for the ammo!

I see that Wolf (steel-cased) is sold for about $110 per 1,000 while PMP (brass-cased) is sold $120 per 1,000. Both prices seem to include shipping.

Since I don't reload, it is worth extra $10 difference to purchase PMP ammo? On the other hand, I understand that PMP ammo is better quality and not quite as dirty as Wolf (and possibly easier on the gun).

If it will help to preserve the gun better in the long run, I don't mind extra $10 per case.

I'd appreciate some thoughts from the AK fans and experts.

Hey skor,

I just bought my first batch of Wolf and I'll try it out tommorow. I have shot south african (who?) and two brands of russian (not wolf) through my SAR-1 and they were all about the same in accuracy, which was terrible..LOL.. I suspect an AK doesn't care what you put in it. The south african looks pretty but after you shoot it who cares how nice the range dirt looks? The one thing I liked about it was that no laquer on it so my fingers didn't turn green from loading the mags a lot.

not much help eh?

Both PMP and Wolf are good ammo. I have used alot of both and have not had any problems. I have been told buy some guys at the range that they have seen over pressure loads in the PMP but I can-not confirm that. I personally would buy which ever is cheaper. www.cheaperthandirt.com has the WOLF 7.62x39 FMJ 20rnd non-corr for $1.99 a box on the website.

I just bought an SKS and a box of 1000rnds of Wolf. I like the Wolf simply because it looks like little Russian missiles.

I think cheaperthandirt.com sells the Wolf(Hollowpoint) for $99 for a box of 1000rnds.

Happy shooting.

I'll post how I like the wolf next week.

Even thought the AK is a great rifle, it's not accurate enough to play the "try all the ammo and find the best" game. Frankly, just find the cheapest stuff an buy lots of it. I have found 7.62x39 Wolf at local gun shows for $79 per 1K, and have found roughly the same online (but you pay for shipping) It works out to about $100 per 1K. Check out the online auction houses (like www.auctionarms.com) for the ammo deals...that's where I found mine.

I've used a couple thousand rounds of Wolf. No problems, but that's what you expect with an AK. Accuracy was good enough that taunting me within earshot could have been hazardous.

So, which is cleaner, PMP or Wolf?

Also, is one loaded "hotter" than the other? We are talking about 7.62x39mm, of course, but I'd like to know the same about 5.56x45mm as well.

Thanks for all the comments.
