AK accuracy

how accurate should i expect my AK to be? its a stamped reciever model by the way. my M1 carbine shoots circles around it, but 7.62 is so much cheaper i shoot the AK more.

About 3-4" at 100yd is typical for a 7.62x39 AK. 5.45x39.5 AKs run about 2-3" at 100yd. I haven't shot a .223 AK so I have no clue what they do.

AK accuracy--isn't that an OXYMORON??? I don't think that the "average" AK is very accurate, altho' there certainly ARE exceptions...as Rex says, around three to four inches at 100 yards is about "normal", altho' I've seen 'em shoot better--very rarely--and WORSE--not quite so uncommon. If I ever run across an AK that'll do an honest two inches at 100 yards, I think I'll buy it to keep!!! Been thru about six or eight different versions over the last seven or eight years and haven't found an "accurate" one yet...but I'm still on the lookout!!!....mikey357

If you want a accurate AK, buy a POLY-TECH AKS. They are the best post-ban AK's available. They can be found for $399 from places like CDNN and Shotgun news. They have the BEST trigger of any AK and are pretty accurate(2.5-3" @100)

My beat up, dogged out Mak-90 manages sub MOB (minute of barndoor) groups all day!

Seriously, about 8" @ 100 yds is typical for me. Benched.

But it has never failed me...

Minute of Barndoor. LMAO! Never heard that one before. Yep, my AK and my Mossberg 590 are in a constant race to break the 10MOA barrier at 50 yards. But like it was said before, with a proper powder charge, both will feed and shoot a roll of wet toilet paper.

I recently got a Rob Arms VEPR II in .223 and it is very accurate. I shot between 1.5 and 2 inches with 3 different types of ammo. only have about 200 rounds thru it but I would venture to say, this is the most accurate of all of the AK types out there. Much better than my SLR-95 and that's a pretty good shooter....

Plus 3-4 inches at 100 yds will knock out your "tgt" if ya know what I mean which is what the AK was designed for...Cheap to make, close combat use and reliable, from that perspective, AK's are good guns

I can usually hit a clay pigeon at 100 yds with a 2.5X scope off a bench with my SAR-2 5.45X39. With my SAR-1 762X39, I can usually hit the backstop somewhere. :)

Milled receiver AK's

Can do better. I have 2" 100 yard groups from my Bulgarian SLR-95, but that was with my own handloads. That's not saying much, handloads will make almost any rifle shoot better than some surplus fodder...

thanks for the replies....im by no means an expert shooter but the accuracy of my MAK-90 just plain sucks. i havent actually tested at 100 yds, but im sure its not very good, probably 8" like the other gentleman suggested. one thing i know is that at short ranges (50 feet and less) my makarov is much more accurate than the AK. i can hit a coke can every try with the mak but the ak is JUST PLAIN INNACURATE. and everyone gives the mini-14 crap......

So what if it shoots 8" @ 100yds? Thats good enough for a shot to the centermass and enough to ruin a bad guys day. You may want to look at changing your ammo too. When the next show comes around your area, go and buy a couple of boxes of each type you can find and give them all a try. You will probably be suprised by the variations in the group size. I say buy a couple of boxes of each because you may also see quality control variations with surplus ammo as well. You should be able to clean that group up with better ammo, but 8" is still enough to ruin your day.

I wasn't flaming you, it just comes as a big suprise to people when the AK wont produce groups like an AR. They are different designs for different goals. If you can get shots on the paper and in the black @ 100yds you got a good AK, thats the way the were designed originally. Luckily we have seen a better quality come to us as their manufacturing has improved. Let us know how it comes out in the long run.

PvtPyle is correct. Try some different ammo in that Mak-90. When I bought my Mak, I knew its limitations. I knew what I was getting into with the AK pattern rifles. But I tell ya, my Mak is a constant companion. It gets the hard, dirty, banged around work my other high dollar wunderrifles will never see.

Get a Bulgie or a milled receiver AK in almost any flavor and you will be just fine accuracy wise. AR's are great for shooting the butt off a knat at 100 yds but so what? Millions of commies can't be wrong. ;)

Are you sure your AK is zeroed?

I have shot two AKs and they all group about 4" from 100 yards with the Norinco, some Czechs, and Sellier and Bellot ammos. Now that the Norincos ammos are all gone, I use Wolf's. My "group" spread to about 6" now.

AK is a 250 yards gun! Don't expect too much.

You guys must have gotten some crap AKs. My old MAK90 is much better than what is described here.

Though I rarely, if ever, shoot paper with it, I've shot desert hares at 100 yards, offhand, with no problems. The trajectory does get rather rainbow-like much over that range, but the accuracy isn't bad.
