AK-74 recommendations

I have decided that an AK in 5.45 would be a neat addition to my current collection. I have a pretty constrained budget at the moment, however. Whats the best one, based on consistent accuracy and quality, at the lowest posssible price point?

AK74's are a hit or miss, as are a lot of AK's built from used parts by US companies. I was lucky, as my brother was really into it, and pretty well connected, that we got some unfired AK74 kits that came in around 4-5 years ago; cream of the crop. Real mil chromed barrels, all parts matching, etc. Very hard to find any kit with a matching barrel now. A lot of the AK74's are built with aftermarket barrels, not chromed bores, and are generally in used condition to start, although they may resemble "new" guns, due to refinishing, etc. You will be challenged to confirm overall quality of any particular gun, and how honest the seller will be about disclosure of the particulars on the gun (plus, many guys just won't know the history of the gun or build). If I really wanted a quality gun, I'd postpone buying until I had the money for a proper Arsenal (Bulgarian made) gun, although I believe they haven't been imported for awhile. I think they were true 5.45's, brand new, modified for import and then re-modified here to be AK spec rifles. Not cheap, but not lacking in any way.

I'm going to look for a used Saiga in 5.45, then have it converted when I get more cash.

Your AK-74 is a beauty, take care of it.

Best decision you'll ever make. Mine's been nothing but awesome. Only thing better would be to convert it yourself, but not everyone has the resources.

Wanted to add: Unless someone is going to sell their used 74 for real chea, you should just go ahead and grab a new one for, what are they now? $350 I think. Try Atlantic firearms. Anyone selling a used one will probably have reconfigured it already and want more than the cost of a brand new one.

Just get the new one for same or less price.

Hopefully I can find one soon. I will probably leave the conversion to my gunsmith (he is a master and he has great prices.)

RedDaemonFox,
I agree, a Saiga in 5.45 these days would be the best option, IMHO. I'm looking forward to getting one soon and converting it also. I wished we didn't have the crazy import laws where they have to destroy a perfectly good chrome lined barrel. What is this country coming to?
