AK-47's

I go to all of the guns shows if they have one with in 100 miles of my home. I have noticed in the last year or so that about all of the Ak's are drying up with the exception of some of the U.S. manufactures that are now making AK's. I do still see a few Romanian ones left but they are thinning out also, and there prices are up a bit from last year. I have no problem with the Romanian AK's as I have 2 of them and they work as well as my friends Polytec, of course they don't have the fit and finish of the Polytec, but the again I didn't pay $1,200 for mine either. I was just wondering why we don't see other brands anymore? I mean if you do it's rare. What do you guys say?

AK's

I think your'e right, our local shows seem to have fewer than I remember. One thing I didn't realize until recently was how hard it is to find any of the old "commie" guns in the chain stores. About the only one that carries them is Dunhams around here. I was glad to give them my business this past summer and bought a WASR double stack. I'm glad folks can afford the fancier models, but it's hard to imagine more fun for the dollar than the WASR.

I have noticed that also. I was at the FW Gun Show about three weeks ago and I saw more ARs than AKs. I think the prices for "good" AKs are going up and the prices for good ARs is coming down, as is the price of 5.56mm/.223 ammo. I "think" the price for 7.62x39 is going up but I don't track that. I have an AK-74 and the 5.45x39 seems stable or reducing.

It seems like you (the OP) are talking mostly about the less expensive Century built AKs. I have noticed slight increases in price over the past year but nothing major like those of the 2008 election. My guess would be economic inflation and fewer surplus parts-kit are the main reasons for the price changes.

Also, I haven't noticed any shortage of them. My LGS has plenty of them in-stock at seemingly all times of the year. The Arsenal AKs did have a dry spell of availablity because of a switch in importers. IIRC they switched from Legion to somebody else. However, if you are patient you can still find good deals on them too. I bought one (immediately) when I received a tip about a sale from Scottsdale Gun Club having the SGL-21 for $699 back in August.

Lastly, you have to keep in mind the decline in popularity, vendor attendance, et cetera at actual gun shows. The Internet has really made them less if an attraction for most people.
