AK-47 Parts Kits- Legal or Not?

The gun laws in California seem to be ammended and updated at a dizzying pace in the state of CA. Does anyone know what the currect verdict of possesing the parts kit for an AK-47 is in CA? Mind you, there is no receiver...just parts. I don't know whether one should assemble the kit with a dummy receiver, or if it's okay to just have some parts!
(Hopefully I posted this correctly!)

I think its fine to have an AK parts kit in CA, with the exception of the mags that hold more than 10 rounds. Just don't attach them to a receiver in a manner that makes the system an "assault rifle".

If I was in California I wouldnt keep them. At the rate the laws change in that state and having to deal with any legal problems not worth the hassle.

Too Late

Well, unfortunately, it's a little late for my friend. And they are being charged with being in possession of an assault rifle. Even though it was clearly stated that it was a disassembled AK-47. They negleted to notice there's no receiver. In California, local governments are allowed to inact even more stringent laws than the state has imposed. But if you try to research any of the laws...good luck. The Office of the Attorney General, Firearms Division, has not seen fit to reply to either of my email requests regarding this.
