Hi - I read a post from last year regarding a fellow with a AK Legend that would not cock the hammer after firing the first round. Yesterday, 10/01/11, I experienced the EXACT problem he described. I've shot at least 1,000 rounds a yr. out of this gun(since 1991) with no mechanical failure's whatsoever. Same symptoms too, load magazine, pull and release charging handle, 1st round fires, ejects empty, and loads 2nd shot, but does not cock the hammer. PTK said it might be a worn auto sear, any suggestion's? Nothing appears to be broken. Is replacing the sear something I can do myself? I do most of my own stuff, but 've never had to work on this weapon.

Probably the easiest fix is to replace the entire hammer, trigger, and disconnecter unit with a Tapco G2 unit.
This not only fixes any problems, it gives a better trigger pull.

To repair what you have is a simple job any gunsmith can do in less than 30 minutes.
This would probably involve stoning the bottom of the disconnecter to increase it's contact with the hammer.

What's probably happening is that the disconnecter doesn't have enough contact with the hammer, and this is allowing the hammer to follow the bolt forward.
With insufficient contact with the hammer, the hammer fails to stay cocked.
In some cases, this allows the rifle to fire two shots at a time.

Replacing the trigger assembly looks worse than it is. There's all kinds of stuff on the internet to help out. What I would recommend is to get a plate that Power Custom makes that replaces your Shepherds Crook spring. It will make it easier to put back together.

Hey, I appreciate the quick feedback and fix suggestions, I'll look into both of these suggestions. Replacing the entire trigger group makes sense as all these piece's have the same amount of wear. If I hold the AK away from me to the side, and strum the trigger with my thumb(like a guitar string) it'll fire full auto for about 20 of the 30 round's or until the AK stops moving backward's from the recoil. I know, I know, that's probably how the sear wore out. That AK is one, tough weapon. THanks again!
