Note to all Connecticut owners of AK-47 clones (SAR-1, Arsenal, etc.)
I had been considering buying an AK clone, and had received different advice from three different gun shops. Two said you can't buy an AK clone in Connecticut; one said you could.
State law re: assault wepaons expressly bans "AK-47 types."
Most all of the other 30 banned rifles refer to SPECIFIC models, not "types." So it's okay to buy a Colt Match Target, but not a Colt Sporter.
So I called the state police firearms unit today. A seargeant told me AK clones are indeed illegal to own. Here's how they judge:
*is the physical appearance (not including the stock) the same?
*is the functionality of the receiver the same?
*are parts interchanegable with the AK-47?
He said if such a weapon is used in the commission of a suspected crime, local police call state police, and they come down and look at it. Then they can impound it.
The sgt. said he is aware that sales of AK-47's are taking place in the state, but that the state police only okays the seller to purchase a weapon. They don't know know the make of the weapon.
So, if you're considering buying an AK-47 clone in Connecticut, it appears you are rolling the dice. FYI.
