AK-47, AK-74 or AN-94 ?

I'm thinking about adding a Kalashnikov to my collection.

Which one would you prefer and why?

Do you think it pays off to wait for the AN-94? (Or are they already available?)

AK-47, the original "evil" rifle. I would take this one in a hearbeat over the others if I could only have one for a collection.

For practicality, maybe an AK-74 because I have heard good things about the little smoking pill that it fires.

I'm not sure what the other rifle is, but it can hardly pay off to wait when you are speaking about Kalashnikov rifles. Supplies are drying up quickly, and I'm thinking that the prices should rise significantly in a year or two.

an 94 forget about this one the russian army doesnt have enough money to equip it's own trops with it
ak47 is the best, mags are cheap, ammo dirt cheap guns themsels are a fraction compering to the ar15
ak74 might be a second addition after the ak47
wolf makes both 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 for both guns which is cheap, surplus ak74 clips from E Germany are cheap now
not to many ak74 were imported before the ban and i don't think u going to get a russian one for sure probably some E European like bulgarian or something which is good quality
check out http://www.ak47.net/ great site lots of reviews

ak-74 if you can only get one.

same design and receiver as the 47 but:

more accurate round, you can even get match ammo from D/N
surplus ammo is just as cheap
less recoil
mags are much cheaper and stronger (bakelite)
both my romanian 47 and 74 came with mounting rails for scopes/red-dot sights
the kobra (russian) red-dot was designed for the 74 (5.45x39) chambering

an 94: why wait?

Don't forget that there are AK's chambered in .223, such as the SAR3 (<$300). There's more variety of ammo available tha for 7.62 or 5.45.

AK-47 is the most practical because of the availability of parts, magazines and ammo. the AK-74 is the most fun to shoot, a bit more accurate, and a hot little round. Mags for the 74 aren't as easy to find in some areas, but tend to be much cheaper. Availability of ammo is a mail order affair in my area, unlike 7.62x39 which can be found anywhere due to the large numbers of SKS's out there.

I think I would get a 47 if I could only get one, and then work on getting the 74. I own both and love 'em both.

cannoncocker - my suggestion on ammo is to mail-order a couple of thousand rounds of 5.45mm now that it is only about $100/1k. when you break into the 2nd thousand, order another thousand. that way you never have to carry ammo back from the store of pay local sales tax.
