Air Travel

I have done it many of time from NC to PA, and back, and as long as the ammo was in a different case locked and the gun case was locked I had no problems. You will most likely have to check in at the counter inside the airport and at that time declare your items and they clear them. Honestly to find out I just gave the airline I was flying a call and asked.

Air travel; firearms...

I don't have a JD & I don't work for DHS(Homeland Security) or the TSA but I have flown on a US airline in CONUS with a firearm(2007) so I'll add this input;
Make sure the firearm(s) are UNLOADED. Any ammunition should be secured in a separate container IAW the airline's SOPs or rules and the FAA; www.FAA.gov .
You will need to declare your firearms at the airport(check in). Stay calm and be polite. Give yourself or anyone who you travel with ample time to go through security or check your weapons, bags, boarding passes, etc.
Get a 2012 ed of the Gun Law Guide For Travellers; www.Gunlawguide.com or atty David Wong's legal guide for firearms & knives. The popular 2A/gun law site; www.Handgunlaw.us may help too.
Many air travel/gun owners print out the most recent airline SOPs or TSA documents too to refer directly to them if there is a major problem.
I purchased a new 50rd box of Remington .38spl +P 125gr JHP for my Ruger GPNY stainless revolver. I had a street legal carry license & drove a vehicle thru 6 states without any hassles.
Stay safe & stay legal...

Yes it is legal as per DHS but make sure that your airline doesn't have a more strict requirement then homeland security.

I regularly fly with multiple guns to multiple states (twice a month on average) and have never had an issue. Because I'm paranoid I printed out and laminated both the TSA regs as well as my airline's policies in case it ever comes into question.

I firmly believe that more people should exercise the right to fly with their guns

I save the original packaging for my carry ammo. When I travel by air, I put the ammo in the original box and lock the ammo in the same case with the gun. I've never had a problem with this.
