Air Rifles

I hope some of you out there know a bit about air rifles.

My girl friend has an 22 air rifle that she hardly ever uses, its really nice with a walnut stock and its made in Germany.

She said it used to be accurate but now its not.

I brought it home and tried to see how it shoots, with 3 different types of ammo it was getting about 4" groups at 30yards.
So I pulled it apart tightened all the bolts holding it together check the rings were tight and tried again, but got the same result.

The only thing left is the scope, I don't think its a proper air rifle scope so I think it could be the problem.

Is there anything else I can check before I buy a different scope to put on it?
I would put a spare rifle scope on it to test it, but I don't want to go and stuff up my scope in the process.

Thanks Sam

Based on what you siad I would try another scope. Non air rifle scopes on a air rifle is not a good mix. The recoil on a ir rifle (there is too) tends to tear the insides of a non air rifle scope up.

Spring piston air rifles are very hold sensitive.

Google "artillery hold".

It might also be worthwhile to order up some premium ammo and see if it does better.

What model is it? Diana? RWS? Something else?

Are there iron sights on the rifle? In that case you could try it with the irons first, to see if the scope is messed up. Tim R is right about the recoil, spring pistons move in two directions when fired, very fast back and forth. Hence firearm scopes tend to break very soon on powerful air rifles.

If there are no irons on it, you could also try to tighten the rifle in a vise or similar and ignore the scope. (Be careful for the rifle though, German air rifles are beautifully crafted and worth some money :) )

Air rifle scopes

If the original scope is trashed, burris optics makes scopes especially designed to withstand the punishing recoil generated by air rifles.
