Aimpoint or Trijicon ACOG for my AR

Which do I want ? I like the idea of no batteries but seeing as its mainly used a IDPA side matches , thats not a strong point . What do you guys think?

AR-15 , carry handle , 14.5 tube W/ Vortex Flash Supressor

I made the same choice about a year ago. I ended up going with the Trijicon Reflex II with the 12 MOA triangle reticle. I love it. If the battery thing doesn't bother you then you can't lose with either choice . They're both top notch IMHO. lax

I was disapointed in the reflex. Maybe it is due to my reticle size. Difficult to see in bright light, blurry and slow to aquire for me. Although many people love them. I would suggest you loot at one before your purchase. ON the other hand the only thing with the aimpoint is the battery. Never heard any other complaints about it.

Whats that Canadian sight? The ELCAN? How does that stack up?

I'm about to purchase a FAL, and eventually I'll be making this same choice...what to put on it?

Thanks,

Mike

I have a 2X Trijicon ACOG w/ red crosshair, I can pick up and sucessfully hit dark colored targets in half moonlight w/ it too dark to even see my front sight assy. No complaints, I feel like the 2X is all one needs out to 300yds or so, only get the chance to shoot mine at 200 though. My vote is definitely w/ the ACOG, you will drop lotsa cash, but you will not make a bad investment.

Yep. Leitz Elcans are definitely on par if not better than the ACOGs. I liked the Elcan's rubber armor and its K.I.S.S. windage/elevation adjustment on the base.
If I were to pick the Aimpoint or ACOG, I'll pick the ACOG. It doesn't run out of batteries and the tritium rangefinding reticle is a plus.

I had this exact same question a few years ago, and I was looking at dropping a good deal of cash on the ACOG (which, by all accounts is a superb product used by our own special ops units).

So I took it one step further to e-mail some of the folks at places like Gunsite to see what they had to say. Their answer was something I never considered: TASCO. I know, I know, TASCO = cheap, right? Well, maybe. However, since CDNN was (still is) selling the TASCO PDP5 for $80, I thought maybe it was worth a look. So I mounted one on a Calfiornia Competitionworks 2-level mount for the AR-15 (a nifty $110 contraption from Brownells catalog that allows a red-dot sight to be mounted forward of the carry handle).

I love it! Yes, I did accidentally leave the thing on and run down the battery, but the batteries are $2 each, so I have a whole stack of them in the case now. I really like the different brightness settings, and the fact that I can adjust the dot size for different situations.

It is a very nice, inexpensive alternative that you may want to look into.
