Does anyone own a S&W K-frame with Ahrend's grips on it? How does it feel....as opposed to standard Smith grips? If you have a picture, I would love to see it!
Reason for this, I'm considering ordering some Ahrend's for my M19 4"
Some of their retro-combats, maple, tung oil finish, on my model 64.
The finger grooves don't fit my small hands quite right, but overall they're much better than the factory magna grips. They also fit the gun perfectly.
I bought the finger grove Cocobolo grips for my 3" 686-6 Plus. I ordered them unfinished. That way, I could reshape them slightly with 80 grit sandpaper and apply several coats of Tung oil. I just rounded off some of the points on the finger grips and re-contoured the profile slightly, to suit. Got just what I wanted!
I have larger hands. I put Ahrends stocks on my 686 -- they were beautiful, but too small. I put the original Hogues back on -- larger front-to-back, narrower side-to-side, better accuracy in MY hands.
These are mine on an N frame, a 25-5. The gun is big and the factory grips are really only suited to Paul Bunyan. These are much better, everyone who has held it thinks they are perfect!
I like them. Have a set of smooth tacticals in cocobolo on my M-18 and just sent away for a set of the same stocks in maple for my newly acquired 586.
In comparison, the service stocks (on the 586 at the bottom of this picture) are horribly tiny and difficult to position in my hand. The Hogue on the 19 in the middle is actually very nice, smaller than the Ahrends and a pretty good fit for my hands. But I like the Ahrends on the 18 as well.
I wear large size gloves but I trained on hand planes before I seriously started shooting. I would even produce my own totes for hand planes. I came to really appreciate thiner grips and a handle your could put your whole hand around comfortably. I take old Security Six grips and grind off the checkering to get them to a thickness I like. Most people think that SS grips are pretty thin- not thin enough for me!
I like Ahrends but some edges tend to be sharp and uncomfortable. So every set of Ahrends i buy gets slightly modified by rounding the sharp edges..especially where the thumb rests...and a couple of thin coats of Tru-Oil.
