OK... here's the deal. I ordered about 12 pair of grips (I have a lot of Smiths!) from Brownells - all Ahrends, mostly round butt finger groove. Among them were about five or six pair with amazing figure in the wood... very dramatic indeed. I just thought they were randomly incredible grips until one day I called Ahrends to order some grips from them (after Brownells stopped carrying the Ahrends line) and told Kim Ahrends about the gorgeous grips I got from Brownells. That's when I learned why I had such amazing grips... Kim had some special wood set aside for grips for his personal use. Turns out that someone in his plant used the wood to make grips and then sent the grips to Brownells along with the standard grade grips. So I just lucked out in finding them and buying them. The pic of the 686-4 above shows one of these grips. The standard cocobolo wood figure grips that are typically found are like the grips shown on my 66 and 642 above. Standard finish is a matte sheen polymer finish which does glisten somewhat in light. My preference for grip finish is hand rubbed oil finish, so I have removed the poly finish and replaced it with hand rubbed teak oil finish - as can be seen on my 686-4 above. This is why some of the Ahrends grips I have in my pics are not like the standard Ahrends grips. Now when I order grips from Ahrends, I ask Kim not to finish the grips I order.... saves me from having to strip the finish in order to apply my Teak oil finish. You can order grips from Ahrends finished or unfinished. The 586 with Morado wood (aka Moradillo, Pau Ferro) grips were supplied to me unfinished and I simply gave them the Teak oiling.
